51. "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
教育只有被专门设计来满足每一个学生个人需求和兴趣的时候才是真正有效率的

In today’s world, individualism is our idol, and this statement naturally claims that education should be designed to meet the needs of each student. Otherwise, it will be inefficient. I fundamentally disagree with the notion except in some special cases.

As I see it, there are two arguments contained in this assertion. The first argues that students benefit more from the kind of education which they are interest in. Logically this can be easily understood. But we overlooks a premise that if each student knows what he or she wants to learn exactly. Sometimes it is even hard for a college student to tell the very research direction he or she is interested in, not to say a pupil. It is obvious that our vision extend with the increase of age as well as the education we receive. In other words, education itself helps to find our inner interest. Only when we have recognized the world as well as ourselves comprehensively could the interest-related education work smoothly.

The second argument has to do with efficiency. I could assume that in this context, it refers to the social efficiency. Actually this concept is quite controversial from the position of pragmatism. The situation with the most efficiency is that the needs of students perfectly match the needs of the society. And the actual situation often goes to the contrary. I am not mean to offense, but people tend to do things which will bring more profits. Students are more willing to go to the area which is well developed and popular. Those fields that are not so hot get less attention. If education is built to encourage this trend, efficiency is sure to fall.

One another reason I could think of to oppose the statement would involve the function of education. We never think that college education is more efficient than primary school education, because they have different purpose. And similarly, literature is by no means less useful than calculus. Moreover, sometimes we recall some knowledge which is taught long time ago when we meet an emergent situation. That really helps a lot. So perhaps it is wise for us to learn something which we are not so interested in, because we cannot predict if things we learn today will be useful some day in the future.

In sum, the issue of education is a complex social problem; the speaker’s assertion is reasonable but is not considerate. Yet I agree that only in higher education should individual interests be taken into account. Except for this situation, we should think it over before making a change.
