Has video camera which provides an accurate and convincing record of contemporary life become a more important form of documentation than written records? In my opinion, I agree with this point insofar as the social news and recreation level, when it comes to commerce as well as politics, written records are necessary and indispensable.
On the one hand, in people’s recreational life, video camera which makes the memory clear and vivid can bring lots of happiness. For instance, when travelling with family, people can record the wonderful time with video camera instead of diary. We can enjoy the memory any time we like, and making video is more convenient than spending time on diary. We don’t have to worry about if we take the paper as well as pen, and whether we would forget if we don’t write down as quickly as possible. Also, video camera can provide social news timely and accurate. 9/11 attack is a point in case. After the airplane attacking the world trade center, journalists immediately record the situation with video camera and soon people knew what happened through TV. Just the quick spread of news accelerates the rescue work and minimizes the casualty.
Video has strong visual effect which significantly impressed people and make people’s life colorful. For instance, the advertisement always uses the strike on the vision to earn the attention from audiences. A video shows the favor to the products by practical behaviors of celebrities in the advertisement is more effective than the tedious description as well as praise to the products. Many video shows provide people with a broad vision to the world, such in the program of recording animal’s life, video camera can screen the detail process of a puma hunting for its food. The breathtaking scenes hardly can be imagined in the written records.
On the other hand, written records which are more formal like contracts and documents must be preserved. In the commercial negotiations, in order to ensure the profit of both sides, a series of conditions and measures have to be considered. The video here may be not as certain as the words seriously weighed in the contract. Also, at the politics level, the treaty can’t be recorded by video camera due to people’s words in the video can be casual and not be checked up back and forth. Thus, the written document is propitious to solve some political problems and make members comply with the regulation and carry out their obligation.
All in all, video camera provides an accurate and convincing record of contemporary life to some extent. however, to maintain the order, in the commerce and politics activities, people have to use written records to restrict people’s behaviors.
