In contemporary society nonmainstream areas of inquiry such as astrology and fortune-telling satisfy human do place an important role. But we should bear in mind that mainstream science always points the way to overcome obstacles and sparks people’s desire in finding truth. Admittedly, nonmainstream areas have survived for thousands of years and still hold considerable influence. People are born with an anxious propensity to know their fate. Astrology column contains much encouragement and warning, thus serves well in this aspect, especially for those who are worried about their jobs or facing difficult decisions. They feel more assured about the future when they consult a palm-reader or fortune-teller. Frequently the advices are like this: “Chances are good that Leo will get a promotion this week, so keep moving on and show your talent to your boss”, These nonmainstream contributions meet a need because they foster enthusiasm and hope and make our lives colorful. However, nonmainstream areas have their own limits. The first one is that it is not rooted in reason. When people are ignorant of the true cause of natural phenomenon, the only way to explain events was to resort to areas like astrology. Nonmainstream areas can harm society when people look to them for genuine solutions to real problems. If a person gets ill , he should seek help from a health care professional but not resort to consulting a fortune-teller.Only by working hard and overcoming difficulty can people successfully solve their problems. If an individual treat an important interview lightly just because the astrology column says that he would be lucky in job-hunting, a great opportunity may be ruined.
The history of mankind informs us that science plays a very vital role of providing people with reasoned methods to conduct life, because it is based on practical experiments, careful analysis, and reasoning. For instance, with the development of vaccines and advanced medicine, we can cure smallpox and other disease, thus lead longer and healthier lives. Thanks to science, our society makes progress constantly. Therefore, more emphasis should be put on science rather
than nonmainstream areas.
Generally speaking, Mainstream areas make our lives more colorful to a great extent, but when we want to solve real problems, we should trust in mainstream science and put them into practice step by step.
