"The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."
1 与我们生活相关的历史的研究有价值
2 其他不是直接相关的也有价值
3 历史还有其未来价值
How can we define the study of history has value? Merely study the history which is relevant to our daily lives? I trend to disagree with it, we should expand on to a wider theme that not only the history related our daily lives but the other history is also important to us and our society.
Famous writer, Francis Bacon, asserts that histories make men wise. As one kind of documentation or instillation of our ancestors' experience, the study of history did play a much part than we used to think in our daily life. The manifestation of the history relating to daily life is biography. When read biography of a celebrity, the stories and the character of protagonist always engenders people's emotional resonance, encouraging and comforting people. By learning the lifetime of Beethoven, we gain courage and persistence from his attitudes towards serious illness and his insist passions to music. From the legend of Martin Luther King, especially his heart-stirring speech, we appreciate the great value of ideal towards an equal society which we are still trying to build and complete. There is no substitute for history, for it inspires us with vivid examples which have values all human being want to share and learn. These values about humanities and ethics determine that history has its unique value to the extent that it is related to our daily lives.
Undoubtedly, when faced with history which may be not directly associated with our daily lives, it is presumptuous to judge the study is of little value. For instance, those certifications of the characters in sagas, despite it is remote from life, still possess its own academic value. Moreover, it preserves, although not always a literal one, the activities of human being in a time which makes the existent documentary of our mankind seems like a whole. It helps us avoid duplicating some mistakes and consequently improve the whole society. Take the World War II as an example. This period of history is bloody, horrific, violent as well as adamant and heroic. It is like a full picture which exposes whole defects and advantages, truculence and amicability of human being. Certainly this war did not relate to our daily directly. However, how feeling when we confront it, how can we let the disaster replay? So, history tells the government and everyone avoid duplicating same mistakes.
Additionally, as we referred above, history has future value which encourages people's confidence to challenge new problems. We often say that history is a mirror that reflects the vicissitude of life. The historical experience of the East Asian economic crisis in 1998 may be a reference to the economic storm in this year. It is definitely right in environmental protection, some natural punishments are warning human. Dare we insist on polluting and deforesting stubbornly? If so, the consequence is conspicuously wrote in the history book. In this aspect, history acts as a foreteller to guide people's life.
In sum, whatever else may be said, the study of all kinds of histories is always of benefit to development of human beings, the history, which is relevant to our daily lives, enriches our thoughts and consoles us. Others may have more profound influence with time elapses. Therefore, the study of history should avoid a desire for quick returns, and whether the study of history has value is not based on its content, but what can we learn from it. |
