基本同意，但是科学是把双刃剑，研究的目的需要国家谨慎地指导。
一般说来，科学研究给人类带来了很大的福利，如人类基因组计划，人类对天文学的研究，对新材料新能源的研究等。
当然也有些科学研究威胁到了人类的利益。核研究诞生了核武器核泄漏等，鸦片和毒品的产生等
所以研究的目的需要很好的指导和规范。

I agree with the author’s borad claim that money spent on research is generally money well invested. Yet, as an notable saying goes, science is a double-edged sword, I concede that the money invested on research does not automatically become a good investment. The research objectives need to be carefully and responsibly guided by the government, especially research on those controversial projects.

Generally speaking, scientific achievement as a result of research have made great contributions to the well-being of human beings. Dating back to the ancient time, the four great inventions of ancient China including the compass, the gunpower, paper and printing provided a mightyt impetus on the Chinese civilization propagation. Thanks to the paper and printing technology, the human can preserve their thoughts reliably and efficiently for convenient communication. Obviously, the compass and gunpower have also brought about many practical functions for human daily life and development. As for modern history, we need to look no further than the example of the Human Gene Project(HGP in short)- the foremost science of the 21st centry. Technology and resources promoted by the HGP are starting to have profound impacts on biomedical research and promise to revolutionize the wider spectrum of biological research and clinical medicine. On the horizon is a new era of molecular medicine characterized less by treating symptoms and more by looking to the most fundamental causes of disease. Medical researchers also will be able to devise novel therapeutic regimens or even replacement of defective genes through gene therapy.In addition to that, the research of astronomy kind of opened up the position of human race itself in the universe; the research on the new energy and new material not only seeks for better life but also supplies safeguard for humans’ survival. All in all, it’s through research that we humans attempt to satisfy our insatiable appetite for knowledge, and our craving to understand ourselves and the world around us.

Yet there are also cases of research that threaten the interests of people. Through the study of atomic nucleus, scientists discovered a great nuclear power.On the one hand, people built nuclear power station to exert such mighty power to serve the people. On the other hand, nuclear weapons were produced largely. Once an atomic bomb exploded, its withering power is sufficient destroy a whole country. After World War 2, in Japan where were assaulted by nuclear bombs, the survived women gave birth to many misformed infants just because of terrible nuclear pollution which exactly dipicts the grave harm to inocent citizens of nuclear weapons. It’s hard to imagine how terrifying and miserable to live in a place full of destructive weapons. Another overt example is the case of opiums and drugs. A s we all konow smoking opiums and drugs seriously endanger people's health and can cause a very strong dependence on the opium psychologically and physiologically. Moreover, many people especially teenagers who are addicted to drugs are easily to commit crimes for money which has become a serious problem im many counties nowadays.

In sum, as everything has two sides, the scientific research can greatly improve the development of human history if we take a good advantage of its fruits, while if it’s under bad control, it would generate evil effcts. Therefore, the purpose of research need to be discreetly and correctly directed and specified so as to make a good investment on research.
