ISSUE212 - "If a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable."

It is an era of competition. To survive in this competitive and quick-paced society, people are educated and forced to concentrate in his own aim and pay all-out efforts. On this premise, it is natural that speaker has such a idea that whatever methods can be taken as long as the goal is worthy of it. However, such a point of view may bring disaster to both the society and the speaker. In my opinion, any means taken to achieve the goal, whatever it is, should be limited in a appropriate extent.

First of all, great losses can be caused to society if everyone takes a unlimited attitude in pursuit of the goal. Humans are social animals. Everyone's behavior in this society will affect others more or less, and the whole society is designed to work on the assumption that people behave reasonably. Otherwise, the whole society will suffer from disorder and everyone in it hurts. To illustrate this assertion, let's have a look at the bankers and investors in wall street who are the arch-criminals of the economic crisis. In pursuit of their own profits, these people packaged non-performing debt into black boxes and labeled "good performing"; these assets were sold and bought all over the world and finally became drains on money and probably causes of new global depression. Ironically, the whole world has paid a hundred or even a thousand times money as the amount they earn.

Furthermore, unrestraint of methods taken to achieve a goal may finally make the goal not achievable. There is an interesting assertion in computer science which
says "The most effective is not necessarily the best for all ". What's more interesting, it still works in this issue. Naturally, people choose the most effective way to fulfill the goal, but a extreme method may cause a failure for sure. In the cold war, in order to protect themselves, the Russian and the American chose the most effective method: producing more and better arms.
However, arms race didn't bring the sense of security. Mutual Assure Destroy ( MAD as it abbreviates) policy became a nightmare tormenting people of both countries. Today, administrations of both countries have taken a more gentle policy, and people get what they really want-the feeling of being safe.

On the other hand, innovation in methods shall be encouraged as long as it is controlled in a suitable extent. The spirit of taking any means to achieve the goal represents the tenacity of human, and many achievements were made in the process of finding a better method.

In summary, the positive attitude of taking all methods to achieve the goal is worth praising as long as it is in the line. Otherwise, it may end in big problems to the society and make all your effort worthless. In a word, any means taken to attain the goal is justifiable, as long as it is not beyond the line.
