黑眼圈都熬出来了…… 望批者狠点,多挑错!
TOPIC: ISSUE144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
Today, the mass media as well as a number of people tend to focus on artists and works far more than on the critic, and some of those people hold the belief that lasting value attributes to artists rather than the critics. Despite the fact that it is the artists who create great works, critics are acting an irreplaceable role, who make pieces of works shining, promote artists and sometimes even make more valuable than before.
The value of an artist' work lies partly on that it reflects the state of the society and the world, which may be more valuable and accurate than a boring history book, partly on that it excavate the aesthetic or impressive part of human and life, including beauty, indolence, selfishness, love, etc.
Admittedly, in terms of some marvellous works by famous artists such as Van Gogh,Beethoven ,Michelangelo, the works of them are of lasting value and are the treasure of mankind. Beethoven's symphony is glorious, and Michelangelo's fresco wonderful, VanGogh's painting deep, Homer's poem majestic. It seems that no one is comparable to such outstanding genius, let alone the critics who simply make comments.
Yet without critics, some pieces of great works would be invisible to us for good . Critics are those who evaluate works of arts. When ordinary people or layman are not able to recognize the value of works of arts; When people neglect or even misunderstand the main idea and the kernel of certain artwork, critics make sure that such kind of works will be thrown into bins by their critical and insightful evaluation. Thanks to the critic, some of the most precious pieces of works are well preserved. For example, Van Gogh, who didn't see his works acceptable and popular in his lifetime, who can't stand out for mental torture and finally killed himself, was eventually proved to be an eminent artists many years after his death when a critic accidentally found a piece of his work and unfolded its value. Today, a single piece of work by Van Gogh worth thousands of millions dollars and the kernel behind is invaluable. Art somethings is subtle and it is hard for experts to understand thoroughly, let alone ordinary people who are not familiar with art.It is critic who can help the public to have a comprehensive understanding of art and even contribute to lead them to the palace of art to some extent.
Furthermore, the value that critic render to society lies not only in what they devote to the public, but also in that they help to enhance the average level of art by drop the dross and advocate the essence among artworks. By criticising poor works, critics make inadequate artists under pressure, thus invisibly forcing them to be more diligent to review, rethink, revise, reform their works and finally improve their skills and perception, at the same time, the general level in the field is promoted. By evaluating perfect works, critics set an intangible line which tells good works from bad, tells nobleness from vulgarity and tells aesthetics from ugliness. In most cases, good works therefore become paradigm that will be helpful to successors to realize what to pursue and what to exceed as well as an impetus for other artists in the same field. Examples to substantiate this are numerous.
When artists with honors are visible to most audiences and fans, we should never forget the value that critic brings to our society. Though it might be incomparable to that of artists, one thing is for sure--they are indispensable just as the artists are. Without critic,we have less chance to wait to see good artworks as well as the increasing development of art circles. |
