The speaker asserts that on account of the increasing diversification and complexity today, reviewing the past provides scarcely any guidance for living in the present. It wrongly suggests that the past is irrelevant to our today’s lives and that history is not instructive, merely with an eye to the difference between foretime and today. To the contrary, I tend to agree with the notion that through studying history and contemplating the past, we can gain many precious gifts which are beneficial both to personal living and to the whole society.
提出issue出现的背景,以及反驳issue的理由,很好。
Admittedly, amounts of contemporary problems have no analogue from earlier times and are unlike any problems earlier societies ever confronted. For example, due to ever-increasing human population, over-consumption in developed nations and global dependencies on finite natural resource, we meet with the growing scarcity of the world’s nature resources which is unique to today’s world. Aside from above environment problem, a great deal of contemporary problems which is (are)also unique to today’s world may be added, such as the ethical issues raised by the use of life-prolong technologies and the ever-present danger of nuclear holocaust which are typical of dozens harmful byproducts of technological innovation and progress. In short, various unprecedented problems with new challenge and complexity actually uniquely exist in modern society.
这一段语言啊什么的都很好,就是放在文中逻辑感不强,你没有延伸去谈你开头段提出的问题,给人的感觉是继续在诉说issue 120出现的背景。
However, even if these problems haven’t been dealt with previously, we can still benefit from existed experience in some respects as we struggling to solve them. Many great scientific advances are basic on current theories or ideas. For instance, the new so-called “string” theory is now posited via reconciling preexisting theories, the quantum theory and relativity theory, in a new way.
On the other hand,(那on the one hand 的内容是否和on the other hand的内容并列呢?一定要注意,从逻辑上看,这两个短语后面的东西一定要是被讨论的对象的两个方面,而不是分别讨论两个对象) many of the other problems are universal and timeless and the history can provides innumerable lessons for ourselves and our society.
On the personal level, studying history helps us to decide how to live our lives. Learning about great accomplishment of the past can inspires us to face own fears and get through the difficulties as we travel through life by emboldening us and lifting our spirits(查了东西,spirit表示人的精神气质什么的除了短语“lift one’s spirits”以外都只能用单数,spirits是“烈酒”的意思). Moreover, appreciating and understanding cultural mores??(morals?), customs, values and ideas in different periods of history can serve to foster a healthy sense of self, cultivate an interest in art and culture, and formulate informed values and ideas for ourselves. All of these ultimately influence the decision in our daily lives.
On the societal(拼写) level, history helps us to avoid repeating the mistakes of past in addressing some society issues. For example, history teach us that it is inappropriate to attempt to legislating morality, as illustrated by failed Prohibition in the 1930s and, more recently, federal legislation to regulate adult material in Internet. And ulteriorly, we can apply this lesson to dealing with such issues as marijuana for medicinal purposes and equal rights for same-sex partners.
这些例子并列起来怪怪的说
To sum up, thought so much is new and complex today, through reviewing the past we can gain much guidance for living in the present and the society can avoid repeating the mistakes form historical lesson.
