The speaker asserts that the only way to succeed is to take a pratical point of view and idealistic views tend to be superceded by simpler, more immediate options. I concede that a practical view is important to success, however the speaker overlooks the significance of idealistic views.

The reason for my agreement with the speaker is that pragmatism is the mainstream idea of today’s world. In such a world with perfect social systems and complete social division of labor, the only thing we are supposed to carry out seems to be making use of all those social resources and creating our own fortune. Schools teach certain skills that will be useful in works, ideas are taken only when they can make great profits, and people get promoted only when he has maken great devotion to his company. People may dream of being a football player, or a pop singer, but that is just a dream, since we human beings are rational aniamls, we tend to put our attention to more realistic possiblities. In some respects, pragmatism equals to individualism and conservatism, becuase everybody wants to succeed and keep away from adventure.

However, our society could not develop without the efforts of those idealists. Those ancestors in every fields are all idealists to some extent. There are idealists in different times. An apt illustration will be Matin Luther King, he made a siginificant speech and he was assassinated later, it was a tragedy for himself, but he made the history, the fusty and evil racial discrimnation was destroyed. Another example is Colombo, he tried a new route that no one had tried before, and he lost most of his boats in the trip and he never lost his courage. Idealists are such people, they have strong will and put it into practice, and they do not care about themselves. No matter what lies before them, they will never change their minds. It is true that there are few idealists in our society, but they always exist. They seek for the truth and are morally noble, and the most important thing is that they played a vital role in the development of the society.

Similarly, idealistic views have great influence on oneself sometimes. Take Micheal Dell as an example. The behavoir of qiutting the college and giving up his major totally rebel the pragmatism and he succeeded, this seems ironic because he made a greater success than those who are more rational and practical. Actually, we can think a lot of examples like this. In these cases, idealistic ideas helps a lot in personal success.

In the final analysis, I agree that the usual way to get success is through practical views. However, if there is anything unperfect in our society, or if there is someone who wants to seek for a diifferent meaning of life, idealistic views will always exist. and these views are of great significance in social progress.
