TOPIC: ISSUE212 - "If a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable."
WORDS: 683 TIME: 01:05:21 DATE: 2009-2-13 23:45:57
I disagree with the speaker's assertion that whatever methods taken to achieve a worthy goal is justifiable due to the possible enormous cost a country or a person might have to pay for the inappropriate behavior and the deleterious effects that might imposed on others. Yet by taking into some special kind of issues that involve global interest and wide cooperation, many means might be necessary to achieve the most benefit of the whole earth.
Basic to any consideration of the methods one might choose for the worthy goal is a cost and profit analysis as one of criteria for the judgment of the soundness of method. Any person or nation as a whole must bear an objective in mind which serves as the motivation for the worthy goal and common sense informs me that very objective should be the improvement of the overall profit of the nation. While some of the means might cost less than the profit gain from the achievement of final aim, it is entirely possible that others, albeit might eventually lead the nation to its destination, would bring too grave problems for the profit to make up. For example, I can think of no better illustration than the outburst of subprime crisis. Although offering shelter for all of its citizens and earning profit are always a nation's objectives, the banks choose an inappropriate way knows issuing mortgages to so-called subprime borrowers, defined as those with lesser ability to repay the loan. Nevertheless, the subprime crisis eventually evolved into a large scale financial crisis, sweeping away all the profit once earned and absorbing billions of taxpayers’ money. The United States spent much more on this misjudgment than it gains, leading to countless unemployment and business failure. Therefore, a sound prediction of the cost of each alternatives are of great necessity before making decisions and erase those with high risk and cost would be a reasonable step.
Equally important is the harmful influence a nation's choice imposed on its neighbors and even nations farther. With the accelerating process of globalization, one nation can hardly be isolated from the interactions of the world. Therefore, other related nations should be taken into account to evaluate the merit of a certain strategy for the worthy goal due to the strong profit interaction between nations. Otherwise, the result can be disappointing. For instance, there used to be a saying as the main strategy of dealing with pollution in early 20th century in the US: the solution of pollution is dilution. With this concept, high chimney raised in the factory area, sending pollutants away to other countries, and municipal solid waste was directly dumped into the sea without proper treatment. These methods attempted to avoid the treatment of pollutants and transport them to neighboring nations. But when the neighbor country did exactly the same, United States started to realize the disappointing consequence. Therefore, from solid proofs in history, including what was just mentioned, we can clearly draw a conclusion that even if the final goal is worthy, the approach possibly bringing grave problems to others should be carefully considered.
Admittedly, some special issues concerning international interest and cooperation are not as simple as one country's action might be sufficient. These global problems can be properly settled only by the combination of nations in a myriad of ways. The global warming, for an example, calls for the enduring effort between nations in fields of education, reduction of greenhouse gases emission and the development of research related of the prevention of further global warming. It is true that whichever field might be money consuming and provides almost no visible outcome for the nation alone, but the earth as a whole benefit from the various means taken to achieve the very goal.
In final analysis, I should point out that approaches cannot be simply decided without sound estimation of the cost of the nation itself as well as other nations. And consequently, not all alternatives are feasible. Yet issues involve interest of several sides would be easier to handle by taking reasonable means of all sides.
