*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
是艺术家而不是评论家带给社会一些具有持久价值的东西。

1.        艺术评论的作用有三：1）引导大众认识艺术；2）评判艺术作品并借此成为一个艺术品的“筛子”；3）将各方观点反馈给艺术家；
2.        对1—1），引导大众认识艺术并非艺术评论的专利，而是各方面的综合作用；同时，最终起到确定性影响的仍就是艺术品本身；
3.        对1—2），固然艺术评论可以起到筛子的作用，但由于受到时代因素,论家个人喜好的影响，往往挂一漏万；有时甚至埋没了优秀的艺术品；
4.        对1—3），艺术家固然应该听取评论家的意见，但他们只有终于自己的内心才能创造出优秀的艺术品；评论可以作为参考，却不是指南；
5.        综上可见，艺术评论有其自身的价值，但真正影响着人类精神生活的是艺术家的创造。

      Is it the artist, or the critic, gives the society something of lasting value? In the respect of the value of art itself, it should be the artist who creates art, but not the critic; even the latter one help masses the understand art in some degree.

     First, consider the functions of art critic: as a leader to help masses touch and understand art; as a filter to select what is “good” in art and what is not; as a mirror of artists to show their success and weakness. With the help of critic, layperson could save the time on reading a bestseller filled with old sayings, or he could know the background of some opera to appreciate it on a deeper level.

      However, further reflecting on these functions reveals some different conclusions. That is, it is the art itself, but not the critic, influences society by influencing the people who touch them.  

      In the aspect of critic’s function as a leader, it could also be accomplished by art teachers, or even our own family members, such as a sister who loves music. In fact, there are various of factors influencing the receiving of art, the education level, the fashion trends, the personal hobbit, even the political background of individuals etc. It is difficult to assert that the critic is the main factor, or a real “leader”. In addition, true appreciation or even huge surprise of art from the moment of touching them by oneself; the art works strike us on emotion, spirits or even souls. From this moment, the lasting value occurs.
     
     In the aspect of critic’s function as a filter, it is not exact actually sometimes it is a paradox. As a member of society, critics are also influenced by their times, their backgrounds and the old taste, so the “filter” usually ignores some creative art works. In these cases, the art critic is limited by some certain factors of times, including old school standard of judgment, the fashion trends, and the benefits of certain classes. For instance, Shakespeare used to be rejected as barbaric by Voltaire; Van Gogh sold only one of his oil paintings during his lifetime because of his dramatic colors and “lacking of skill”. So instead of listening to the critic, maybe people should choose to face the art by themselves to enjoy the real lasting value.
      
      In the aspect of critic’s function as a mirror, the issue lays in the problem whether artists should follow the art critic or not. Of course, sometimes art critic feed the judgment back to artist and help them to see something hard to tell by oneself. However, if an artist just follows the suggestions from critics, he or she will produce crafts instructed by clients but not art fruits growing from heart. Comparing to the skill, form and content, art is much more about ones real passion and inner spirit. In some degree, critic may be a reverence but not guider to art.

       To sum up, though critic has its one value both on masses and artist, the real and lasting value only comes from art itself. As the famous critic Susan Sontag wrote, interpretation had become "the intellect's revenge upon art", "in place of a hermeneutics we need an erotic of art".
