Issue221 the chief benefit of the study of history is to break down the illusion that people in one period of time are significantly different from people who lived at any other time in history.

History is just like a mirror, through which we can clearly recognize ourselves, including the advances, particularity, as well as drawbacks. By studying the history, we can find out not only the common things which are hardly changed, as the speaker asserts, but also the great differences between generations in human history. No matter the distinctness or the sameness, when it comes to the chief benefit of the study of history, both of which are equally essential as to human progress and social development.

Ever major progressional step of human history is not changed discretely, so that there must be something came down generation by generation. Notable, our basic human nature, consisting of desires, motives, and fear and so on, has remained constant over different time. No matter how significantly the society has shifted, people in different times of history were all will facing with some similar social problems, such as confronting crime, protecting environment, researching medical treatment, pushing education, etc. Through this realization, we can benefit as a society in dealing more effectively with these enduring problems. In addition, by studying about grand accomplishment of the past can help us get through the everyday business of living and lifting our spirit. Studying historical examples of brilliant characters can also provide omen significant motivation toward daily life. Furthermore, the mistakes of the past can also teach us as society how to prevent from repeating the same mistakes. History can points out us the inappropriateness of addressing certain similar issues in different times, which have significant merit for presently pressing social problem...

On the other hand, we cannot refuse the differences between peoples of different time periods. In terms of faith and values, modern people differ greatly from people who lived in middle Ages. Hundreds years age, people in China server the so-called “foot-binding” as a kind of aesthetics of female. But now, you can hardly find a Chinese woman who is willing to bind her foot. Also, in terms of life styles, contemporary Americans have almost nothing in common with their puritan ancestors- the first settler in the “New World”. Even in the same period of time in history, people living in one culture could be different in many ways from people in another culture. Before the Civil War in American history, while people who lived in the north were trying to delaminate the race’s discrimination, black people in the south were still served as slavers. Therefore, considering the whole human history, the number of differences is much more than that of the sameness.

After conceding the realization of significant differences in history, I contend that it is equally beneficial to understand and appreciate those dissimilarities- in terms of cultural, customs, technologies, and ideals. By studying our social constitution in history, from slave ages, to
feudalism society, to now the capitalism or socialism, we will have a better understanding on the advantages and disadvantages in different kind of society , and with a clearly view to correctly judge our modern society. After all, we felicitate that all of us are living in such a democratic and compatible society, not need to suffer as slavers. By studying the distinct technology ages, from stones age, to steam age, and to recent information age, we can ensure that we are standing on the right direction toward technical development. The answer to the question that what the next age will be like only can be found by the studying of history.

Obviously, it is really hard to determine what the chief benefit of study of history is. From my personal prospect, I just partly agree with the speaker’s opinion that the mainly benefit of studying history is to awoke people that something is unchangeable in history. I insist that both the differences and sameness in distinct period’s times have evitable merit toward modern society.
