In this recommendation, the director of personnel advices that by hiring mainly older employees the printing company would reduce the need for supervisors, so that they will increase its productivity and save money. To bolster this conclusion, the arguer points out certain statistics of a survey showing that younger employees are more productive in the presence of immediate supervisor than older. However, this argument suffers several logical flaws which make it unconvincing as it stands.
To begin, the main problem in this argument is relied on the survey the director uses for supporting. Since the director does not provide any specific and detail information about this investigation of employees’ reports, the produce(结果是result) of survey is doubted. The reason why older employees reports lastly than younger may not due to that older are not need the presence of supervisors. Perhaps, the number of older employees only account for a small part of the total members in company, so that the report they made are reasonable fewer.(我记得文章说的就是比例,所以没有这个问题?) Or maybe due to some personal reasons, the older people were less likely spoken out their opinion. After all, in the absence of any information concerning the performance of other workers within the three age groups whose opinions were not represented in the survey, any conclusion drawn so far as to which age group is more paucities is unreliable.
Even though the survey is reliable, the arguer also fails to compare the respective productivity of the three age gourps.age groups. Were I concede that young people are more need the supervise, at the same time, I question whether the young employees’ productivities are significantly larger than older? If the profit younger employees can make are much higher than the money spender on employing supervisors, then this investment is indeed worth and will improve the productivity of whole company. (我一般倾向于讲反面结果,毕竟是挑刺嘛)Therefore, the merely evidence about the employees’ opinion cannot let me accept that older employees are more needed to be hired than the younger.
Finally, the director’s conclusion that the printing company can increase its productivity and save money through hiring mainly older employees is problematic in two aspects. On the one hand, from common sense,
young employees’ demand of the salary are relatively lower than the older, which means that employing older people will actually increase the cost of company rather than save money as the speaker indicates. On the other hand, he or she also ignores the negative potential effects of this policy. If young employees know that they are not regarded, it will negatively influence their daily performance on working, which only brings harm to the company.
In conclusion, this argument is not well reasoned. To make it logically acceptable, the arguer must make sure the survey is sufficiently effective. Also, the arguer must take in to account the negative results this policy may make. To better evaluate the argument, I would need more information about the respective employees’ productivities in the company.
