Who can decide the greatness of individuals, their contemporaries or those living after them? According to the speaker, only the latter can make an estimate of the greatness of individuals. In my view, the speaker’s assertion is too extreme. I strongly agree with the speaker insofar as that in some cases, the greatness of individuals can be evaluated fairer by those who live after them, since their value need to be later proved or confirmed or the value not according with the mainstream ideology then. Nevertheless, it is undeniable that many individual achievements were immediately recognized during their own time.
First, consider some great people in the field of science. On the one hand due to lacking powerful evidence to support their opinion, many achievements of great scientists cannot be admitted immediately. Particularly when their conclusions were opposite to the ideology then, they were scorned and even vilified. The misery Galileo had encountered aptly illustrated this point. Observing the skies with the telescope, Galileo was convinced that the earth revolves around the sun, which has been taken for granted today. However, in the doctrine of the Catholic Church the center of the universe is the earth, and accordingly the Galileo was seem radical then and even arrested to concede what he knew was not true. The greatness of Galileo was not recognized until Newtonian mechanics was established in seventeenth century. In short, the significance of contributions made by scientists sometimes cannot be identified by their contemporaries but only by those following them.
On the other hand, owing to their undisputable contributions and widely application of the works, some great scientists accept the praise not only from those who live after them but also from their contemporaries. The example to support this point is not rare. For example, Marie Curie was honored with two Nobel Prizes in different realm. And today many scientists still take her as an example.
Next consider the field of art. Influenced by many factors including the mainstream cultural and the political environment, the greatness of some artists - whether in music, visual arts or literature – was not immediately recognized. History is filled with examples to support this point. A telling example involves a Dutch Post-Impressionist artist Van Gogh. He is one of three pioneers of Expressionism and have an enormous influence on 20th century art. While some of his paintings are now among the world's best known, most popular and expensive works of art, his works was not attended to anybody all his life.
However, since sometimes the value can be judged at face, some artistic greatness immediately recognized. For example, through his patronage, the Pope recognized Michelangelo's artistic greatness, while the monarchs of Europe immediately recognized Mozart's greatness by granting him their most generous commissions. Mark Twain became a best-selling author and household name even during his lifetime.
To sum up, many individual achievements were immediately recognized during their own time and confirmed later, whereas some greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them. |
