You are going on a lawsuit, suppose that, you are probably told by you attorney that you should dress appropriately. No matter gauntly, formally, or piteously you dressed, you should try your best to strive for the jury's sympathy. That is because there is a long tradition that people always judge others by appearance. I do confess that there is much point in the statement that the way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people. However, under the pressure of modern society there is some variance.

In the long run the way of dress, act, and look often reflects the attitudes and interests of individuals and hence reveals the ideas and values of the whole society. Japanese is known for their manners while Americans for their unrestraint. One can easily find out this from the behaviors of Japanese and dresses of Americans. Making bows is a action that Japanese people do most. When you see someone bows whenever he express the emotion of thank, apologize, or etc you can easily consider him Japanese. Their behaviors represents the value of manners of the Yamato and hence the Japanese society. Moreover, the difference in the way of look, dress, and act among nations represents the difference of ideas and values.

People's appearance and behavior change with the pace of the improvement of society. Take China as an example, army-green was the only color that appeared during the 1970's in China and people had an everyday job to admire their great leaders. While during the 1980's other color began to appear on the dresses of women in China and people started to find their fortune to cities like Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Nowadays you can hardly tell who is Chinese simply by their appearance and behavior. These coincident with the development of China from the Cultural Revolution to the Reform and Opening and the vicissitude of the ideas and values of Chinese people from cult for personality to internationalization. All these above are how appearance and behavior reflect individuals' attitudes and interests and a nation's ideas and values.

However, in modern society where people are under great pressure of living, working, or even marriage the appearance and behavior of someone is not always come from his inner world. A striking example is college graduates. When I was still in university I and other students around me were in jeans and T-shirts and we bantered with each other everyday. But when we began to seek jobs everyone was in business suit and pranced. You can hardly say the ideas and values had a tremendous change just in a couple of days, so the only available answer is that their appearance and behavior did not coincident with their attitudes. When it comes to the cases when an underling meets his superior and when a boy wants to chase a girl, he will certainly not behavior followed by his real mind, the most possible situation is he will act whatever the other one wants. No doubt there comes a saying that all people today are living behind masks.

To sum up, somehow it is reasonable to say that the way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests and you can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people. However, in order to survive in the modern society, the fact of today is that people hide their true ideas behind a smiling face no matter wherer they belongs to.
