The role of history has almost never been underrated, while the contentions with the function or effect of history always exist. I agree that the study of history has value when it is relevant to our daily lives. However, the value of history should not be limited within such narrow area, for it is useful to almost every aspect of human society.
History to a society is as memory to a person. Without memory, man can barely do nothing right. The studying of history not only let people know and understand the past, but also help people face contemporary and future problems. For example, with the studying of the economy thriving in the past, people get to know which factors may have influence on economy, and how those factors work. Then, those factors may take into consideration for nowadays' economic construction. Furthermore, when people noticed the economic depression is probably taking place, they could go to library and check what has happened during the last economic depression, and more importantly, what ceased the depression. Only after the depression was well understood, can people get rid of it with as little cost as possible.
Secondly, the studying of history helps people establish good morality and gain courage. During the learning of how Newton became a scientist and how he discovered gravity, people find out that gumption such as hard-working is an essential part of studying. During the learning of how bulb was invented by Edison, people realize the persistence is absolutely important for an individual when he or she is facing a really difficult problem. In short, people were inspired or encouraged by learning history, especially the great achievements done by those great ones, or how failure was coped. With such spirits, one can achieve greatness and be fearless.
Moreover, history helps tell people who they were, and where they came from. Every since a person is able to talk, such questions emerge. Only by studying history, this problem can be solved. Through the study of history about the family, the nation, or the country, a person gets to know that he or she is an individual constructed with blood and flesh, not a nobody coming from nowhere. Further, it also helps people know and understand each other, more importantly, respect each other.
Last but not least, learning history provides fun. It is a way of satisfying people's curiosity, and brings entertainment. People can put themselves into the study of history, cheer for the successful flying of the first plane created by Wright brothers, happy for the ending of World War II, and mourn for the sacrifice of Copernicus.
In sum, the function and effect of history influence human society deeply and widely. It value is far more just help people deal with those little problems they faced every day. In fact, the study of history can not only tell people where they came from, but also where they are, and what they ought to do. |
