160:"The most essential quality of an effective leader is the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives. Any leader who is quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion will accomplish little."
This statement actually consists of two claims. First, the ability to remain consistently committed to certain personal principles and objectives is the most crucial quality of an effective leader. Secondly, any leader who is inconstant is hard to reach success. As far as I am concerted, I concede that the quality of being consistent is important to an effective leader; however, being stubborn will bring about negative effects to his/her leadership. In my view, although I agree with the first claim, I basically hold different opinions toward the second one.
Admittedly, the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives is an imperative precondition of any successful leader. The leader is the one who leads and guides others. People are willing to follow the leaders just because they possess strong briefs in the direction, integrity and objective beyond the common people. So effective leader should persist to the desired goal, no matter what difficulties may encumber the tough procedure. When Japanese army was invading “Old China”, Maoze Dong, who is later the first president of China, leads Chinese soldiers fighting against enemy. Although at that time, the distant between the military forces in two countries is considerable large, Mao still insist on his belief that Chinese will eventually win the war. It is his brilliant personality encourages his soldiers, and makes them stronger. In some senses, without the character of Mao’s persistence, the “New China” may never be established forever.
However, it does not mean that a leader should always stick to his own particular principles and objective without accept other’s advices and opinions. Many lessons from history show us that leaders who doggedly peruse personal desires might bring disaster to his society, country or even the whole world. When Hitler wants to bring into other countries, his idea once suffered from opposing of his subordination. However, he didn’t accept the adverse opinion, which finally results in dragging many countries into the catastrophe of World War II. Again, the chairman Mao has also been made the similar mistake after New China established. At that time, many provident people, including Dengxiao Ping, the second chairman of China, advice him that the presently mainly contradiction of Chinese gradation has already shifted from interior to exterior. However, Mao not only ignore this mind, but also immure those people who against him. Afterward, the whole China is plugged into a disordered situation.
Since the situation in present society is keeping rapidly changing, therefore there is hardly a principle or objective is suitable for any condition. In such situation, the leader should adjust their objectives rather than merely remain committed to particular principles and objectives according to the present cases. Take Andy Grove, chairman of Intel, as an instance. Memory chips were Intel’s original business. However, Intel almost went under during the mid-1980s as a result of fierce competition from Japanese Chipmaker Company. It is Andy Grove who determined to adjust their objective, taking Intel out of the memory chip business and into microprocessors. Now, Intel shares the biggest market of microprocessor. Hence, a successful leader should be flexible enough to adapt to different circumstances and take into account popular advices for preserving the objectives correctly and comprehensively.
Since polarity in either side, absolutely commits to personal principles or easily influenced by shifts in other opinions, is not advisable, the moderation, in other words, a balance made between the two maybe more appropriate. Based on the persistence of personal principles, the leaders should also adopt the popular advices as well. |
