131"The arts (painting, music, literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society."
Picasso, who is a famous Spanish painter, has ever said that: "art is a lie that tells the truth", which means that art is something that reflects our real world in an exaggerated way. In my point of view, I fundamentally agree with the speaker that the arts can expose some concealed ideas and impulses of a society.
Turning first to paintings and music, there is a tendency to signify people's emotional feedback of life, such as happiness, hope, and sorrow. Picasso, who is mentioned just now, drew a painting which calls "the Dove", expressing his discontent with Nazi and his hope of liberty and freedom. So do some musicians, who tend to reveal the unnoticed impulses of the society in their music. The Beatles, which is a splendid band in 1960s, composed several songs against the war, calling for peace all over the world.
Turning next to literature, it seems that majority of works tend to tell us experiences and thoughts of people in society. For example, the well-known novel "The Old Man and The Sea" written by Hemingway conveys his appreciation of great power of Mother Nature and human being's courage. The novel intends to tell people the rival between the wild and human being, yet actually in expressing of the harmony relationship between human and nature. To be more straightforward, we should take another example--"Gone with the Wind", which was a celebrated novel depicting stories happened in American Civil War, induced people to look forward to a brand new life with a classic sentence--"Tomorrow is another day."
Besides, not all the arts, as my part, reflect the unbeknown ideas and impulses of a society. Actually, there still are part of them reveal a personal inner world which is nothing to do with the real society. Some of them represent the religions believes of the artists; some of them stand for their multiple fantasies; also some show their unreasonable dreams.
As discussed above, part of arts such as painting, music and literature can reveal the unheeded ideas and impulses of a society, while others can expose personal details.
