Art, which is defined as the process of deliberately arranging elements in a way that appeals to sense and emotion, usually encompasses a devised range of human activities, creation, and modes of expression. Based on the characteristics of art, sentimental artists and reasoned critics often have an uneasy relationship, which results the disputation of whether the criticism is just meaningless obstacle on an artist’s dreaming way. Although ciritics’ self-limits sometimes have negative effect on artists’career, the complete negation of critics’function might lead to a confusing situation of both the art world and the public.

The assertion that criticism will undermine and constrain an artist’s creativity is, to some extent, the gainsay of critics’ability of appreciation. We have to admit that the speaker’s point is forgivable, for critics usually tend to criticize arts in context of aesthetics or the theory of beauty. Their pursuit of a rational basis for art appreciation seems adverse to the individaul development of artists’ creativity. Yet, as a matter of fact, a good critic must own an acute sensibility and preeminent adaption of the new and creative movement of art to keep up with the high pace of art development, especially in this fast-moving modern world. Thus, for those really creative and outstanding artistic works, critics usually can make proper and reasoned judgement or analysis, and
in most of times, their evaluation unlikely becomes the obstacle of the artist’s career. To the contrary, those critical and elaborate views might help public understand the profound art works in a more reasoned way, hence promote the works’s spread and confirm the value of art.

So who can imagine a pure art world without any criticism? Too many different types of movement of art appear, which would not only confuse the public, but also cause the lack of evaluation and approvement of new works, and thus, a lot of creative artists would probably be buried in the sea of cliche and old-style colors.

Linus Pauling, one of the most influential chemists in history, once asked at a public lecture how one creates scientific theories, replied that one must endeavor to come up with many ideas-then discard the useless ones. It is nearly the same with the art world as for what is creativity. Often associated with chance, art creativity tends to be considered
largely up to artists’ own talent. Yet just like innovative scientific ideas, great and creative art works call for artists’ perspiration. In other words, artists’ creativity stem from their experiences, spectrum of knowledge and self-modification of the spirits. Those who argue that criticism might undermine and constrain artists’ creativity ostensibly regard creativity as a type of innate ability, and never realize that to generate innovating art works requires rational thinking and analysis as well., criticism is helpful to some extent for artists to review their works in a more reasoned way, hence find out the flaws of it to make the works more perfect. Moreover, great art works is not only the matter of creativity. Technique and theoretical konwledge are equally important for artists to generate outstanding works. So, in this case, criticism is likely just for some technical clefts, which have nothing to do with creativity.

Though critics function in art world is indispensable, we have to admit that critics, usually offering judgement, analysis and observation as individuals, inevitably have some certain limits to evaluate every artist with the correspondingly different and imaginative comprehension as what artists expect from them.
Sometimes critics might be unable to adapt new movement in art and allow their opinions override their objectivity, resulting in inappropriate dated critique. For example, John Ruskin famously compared one of James McNeil Whistler’s paintings,Noctune in Blck and Gold: The falling Rocket, to “flinging a pot of paint in the public’s face. Whether this painting is really as what Ruskin said is hard to say, especially for an artists whose art theories have influenced the art world and the broader culture. So if an artist concern too much with what critics think of his works, he is very likely to “generate” art works pandering to critics’taste, and this might lead to the lost of the creativity of himself. Just as
John Le Carre
said when he explained what every write wants, “…to study his image in the sight of those who do not know him can be his undoing: he has begun to write to please.

In sum, what critics have done for art world cannot be ignored, though some negative effects inevitably appear. An artist might not need an orgnized mind, yet an ordered art world is necessary for his individual development.

(为什么should的点:critic的思想是理论化的,是一种理性的产物,这与个性发展对立)Yet, as a matter of fact, a good critic must own an acute sensibility and preeminent adaption of the new and creative movement of art to keep up with the high pace of art development, especially in this fast-moving modern world. Thus, for those really creative and outstanding artistic works, critics usually can make proper and reasoned judgement or analysis, and  in most of times, their evaluation unlikely becomes the obstacle of the artist’s career. To the contrary, those critical and elaborate views might help public understand the profound art works in a more reasoned way, hence promote the works’s spread and confirm the value of art.

So who can imagine a pure art world without any criticism? Moreover, great art works is not only the matter of creativity. Technique and theoretical konwledge are equally important for artists to generate outstanding works. So, in this case, criticism is likely just for some technical clefts, which have nothing to do with creativity.(这段从艺术家品质来说,一共是两个方面,其一,creativity不仅仅是一种天赋,更要靠后天努力,同时也需要理性的思考,所以批评在某种程度上对其还有帮助;另一点,伟大的作品不仅仅需要创新,还有技术和理论基础,批评可能是针对他们的。)

In sum, what critics have done for art world cannot be ignored, though some negative effects inevitably appear. An artist might not need an orgnized mind, yet an ordered art world is necessary for his individual development.(实在想不出还有什么可说的,写到最后的时候觉得什么都干涸了)
