issue233:Although innovation such as video, computers, and the internet seem to offer schools improved methods for instructing students, these thenologies all too often distract from real learning.

In this era of rapid technological change leading to incresing learning rovolution, both negative and positive effects in almost every field call for a balance to conciliate such dilemma.Take the case of teaching for instace, today many,if not all, schools have adopted sophiscated equipments such as videos and computers as their teaching aids, and provide their student with on-line teaching, all these measures are aimed at improving instuction and better serving the students;while there are also concerns, such as that claimed by the arguer, that these seemingly helpful methods actually cause more trouble than benefit, for they may distract students from real learning.
But the arguer’ statement is somewhat narrow, and I cannot agree more with the introduction of these measures to teaching, all of which bring great changes to learning and teaching patterns.Consider the emergence and influence of the computer, which is widely valued as an revolutionary invention of the 20 century, and contribute a lot in a great range from our leanring to socity progrss.
First, compared with traditional mechanical teaching methods, which ,more often than not, either make smart students feel dull or leave students with comparatively slow thought in puzzle, the computer assisted instruction(CAI)is in a position to accommodate individual differences in leaning speed. In addtion, the CAI provides students with a stress-free environment in which they learn without competition from their peers and pressure from  teachers.Individual often,if not always, learns faster and better under a less-than-nervous condition.Thirdly, the CAI also has an advantage that makes it override traditional teaching for its quick feedback to students’ response,In traditional classes,a student hand in his or her homewok, and has to wait for somedays before it be graded and hand down;with the aid of CAI,however, student can get an immediate answer, which not only save the time of students but also free teachers from the heavy burden of marking myriad of homwork.
Similarly, other means have developed teaching as well as learning efficiency greatly. With the aid of video,we make it possible to learn through a vivid method with sound and image;thanks to the Internet we are now provided with a limitless access to all kinds of kowledge, thus keeping us with the contemporary technology.Generally spekeaking, they all offer students a much broader view of konwledge.
As to arguer’s assertion that these technologies all too often distract from real learning.Admittedly this concern is well supported, especially among parents and teachers. If the definition of “real learning”means the kowledge that imparted to make an individual as a qualified member of the society and able to make contributions to it,other than to teach a student for the sake of knowledge, and there is no evidence prove that this problem is severe enough to be distructive, given such consideration, on no account should we reject the introduction of videos, computersand the Internet to teaching realm.Altough the risk of students’ distraction does exist,it is not these methods themselves that necessarily lead to distraction, and relevant measures will be developed and adopted to aviod it.
When humannity make new progress, new problems will persistently come into being ,and the history of humannity is the history during which new problems are continuously discovered and sovoled .Again,it is what our society depends on to develop.
On balance, scientific progress always brings more good than evil,so is the case of the introduction of videos, computers and the Internet to schools. The possibility of students being distacted, though exists, from real learning by new teaching equipment cannot be used as an excuse to prevent teachers and students from benefiting from technological progress.
