07/07/07: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? University students
should be required to take basic science classes even they are not part of the
field of the study. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

yes
1 necessary for entering into the society EG: literature learn math physics
2 good to their major's study
med learn math

3 find their true interest compare

Should university students be required to learn basic sciences that are not part of the major they are studying? Different people may respond to this question variously according to their own personal experiences or educational levels. However, as far as I am concerned, I totally agree with the statement that students should learn basic science even though these disciplines are not their own majors.

To begin with, it is necessary for university students to learn not only their major but also other basic sciences. Because when these students graduated, they will face a society which requires not only the knowledge of their own major but also other basic sciences. Let me take the students who are majored in literature as an example, when these students enter the society, they will also have to deal with some physical problems, such as the electricity. If the students do not have any knowledge about the electricity, they may hurt themselves when they are using electricity. Thus we can see, learning other basic science is important for students to live in the society.

In addition, to learn something of other basic science can also help students to better understand their own field of study. Because nowadays, hardly are there any discipline that is isolated from other disciplines. For example, as a student majoring in medicine, if I want to learn medicine well, I have to learn some knowledge of computers because lots of advanced methods of diagnosing diseases are related to the use of computers. Only by mastering some knowledge of computers can I be a good student in medicine, and a eminent doctor in the future.

Last but not least, attending the classes of other basic science can also help college students to discover their true interest. Only by being exposed to various disciplines can the college students have a chance to know different areas and compare whether a discipline suits the students most.

Taking into consideration what has been discussed above, we may safely draw the conclusion that allowing university students to join in some other areas of study is beneficial to the students, and therefore the college should let the students take part in such classes.
