【INTO THE FIRE】 Issue7 by 银落(saya)

The video camera provides such an accurate and convincing record of contemporary life that it has become a more important form of documentation than written records.
As the video camera has been introduced to us humans, more and more people share a belief that video camera can display our contemporary life through its accurate and convincing record. Admittedly, no one, of course, will deny such fact that it do have vivid and objective view screen. However, we cannot overlook the importance of written records with its subjectivity and convenience simply for that.
According to this statement, it might be attempting to agree with the notion for two respects. The first argument is established on the reason that if we tend to show something picturesque or strong impact it incites, the most possible tool first coming into our minds will be the video camera. No doubt that due to its basic function is to record temporal and spatial events, it can provide us with not only lifelike images but also an illusion that we might think we have experienced such event, thus easier to explain why when it comes to the World Cup or the Olympic Games, discourse addressed by American President or their campaign debates, fashion collections in Paris or symphony concerts, the best way to witness and then record them is to use a video camera which is able to reproduce the very occasion happened that time, not presently.
The second argument which supports the assertion has to do with objectivity, as one of the most important considerations in measuring whether the event is well recorded. Consider, our TV news, for example. Obviously, it allows us to view the reality in an objective way, furthermore, we may detail the event through what video camera presents. Yet, can we accordingly say that we don’t need written records any more for the reason mentioned above? Just taking the same instance of TV news, can you imagine those view screens accompanied by no explanatory words which can provide the relevant background to supplement the records much better to our understanding?
Therefore, no less significance should be place on written records compared to the video camera. Despite the single reason above, there exists another two to appeal more emphasis on written records. One of argument against the position in which the assertion stands is its subjectivity. One apt illustration of this point involves diary. Certainly, it is a form of written records that we keep it every day by writing down all of our emotions such as what we felt, thought, cherished and detested, which values a lot just because the implicit-expressed personal feelings hidden between the lines. What’s more, it also can take us into an imaginary and lifelike world existing in the deep heart of an individual who keeps a log.
Another argument, the one I find most compelling, is that written records have an advantage over the video camera on convenience. Firstly, if we want to take a picture by video camera, we should possess it in hand, or we could simply envisioning doing so. Next, even if we are given such machine, there are so many instantaneous moments that we hardly have quick enough reaction and action to catch it. Finally, we clearly realize that the only access to watching finished product made by video camera calls for more sophisticated instrument such as TV set, computer to represent the work we have down. Contrarily, written records won’t trouble us like this. We can take down any idea once it bumps into our minds on a little paper with a pen that can be taken everywhere. We can also see the words used everywhere such as books, slogans, warning signs and so forth which contains diversified meanings and presentations.
In the final analysis, turning our focus on what form of documentation is more important is futile, and, of course, will cause controversy resulted from a great deal of different people’s habits to record daily life, news, expression of emotion, beautiful scenes in sight. Instead, what is more consequential is that no matter video camera or written records, both of them have its own advantage, thus things needed to be record can eventually show us a round and closer to real scope, which is the original purpose for which we use them.
