TOPIC: ARGUMENT242 - The following appeared as an editorial in the student newspaper of Groveton College.

"To combat the recently reported dramatic rise in cheating among college and university students, these institutions should adopt honor codes similar to Groveton's, which calls for students to agree not to cheat in their academic endeavors and to notify a faculty member if they suspect that others have cheated. Groveton's honor code replaced an old-fashioned system in which students were closely monitored by teachers and an average of thirty cases of cheating per year was reported. The honor code has proven far more successful: in the first year it was in place, students reported twenty-one cases of cheating; five years later, this figure had dropped to fourteen. Moreover, in a recent survey conducted by the Groveton honor council, a majority of students said that they would be less likely to cheat with an honor code in place than without."

In this argument, the author concludes that, in order to decrease the dramatic rise in cheating among college and university students, the institutions should adopt honor codes similar to Groveton's. To support this conclusion, the author cites the fact that before using the honor codes there are thirty cases of cheating per year were reported, in the first year only 21 cases reported, and five years later only 14 cases reported. The author also points out the result of a recent survey.

Firstly, the arguer's conclusion depends on the questionable assumption that the students are as detective as teachers to be conscious of cheating and they would notify a faculty member if they detect it. As we all known, the students always focus on their own study, and the responsible to find cheating is teachers'. Even if students find someone cheating, it is more likely that they would not notify a faculty member because the relationship between students is always closer than that between students and faculty. The reported numbers do not mean the factual numbers because maybe many cases were not notified to faculty members.

Secondly, even if all the cases of cheating were reported, the statistics cited by the argument is doubtable for the reason that the numbers of cases of cheating in the second to fourth year are not mentioned, and there is no information available to prove that the average number of the cases is falling. Perhaps the numbers of cases of cheating in the second to fourth year are much larger and, as a result, the average is increasing. Or perhaps that students have been tired with the honor codes and did not want to notify even they noticed someone cheating.

Thirdly, the survey result as reported by the arguer is also questionable because the argument simply equates the claim that students would be less likely to cheat with the fact of that. Actually, common sense tells us that some people would not tell truth especially in this kind of survey that related to their reputations. Perhaps some students, who claimed that they would be less likely to cheat with an honor code in place than without, would continue to cheat as before.

In sum, the argument is unconvincing as it stands. To strengthen it the author must provide clear evidence that the number of cases of cheating is decreased in five years because of the honor codes rather than other reasons.

The author also points out the result of a recent survey.没交代你接下来要说什么啊)

Firstly, the arguer's conclusion depends on the questionable assumption that the students are as detective as teachers to be conscious of cheating and they would notify a faculty member if they detect it. As we all known, the students always focus on their own study, and the responsibleresponsibility to find cheating is teachers'. Even if students find someone cheating, it is more likely that they would not notify a faculty member because the relationship between students is always closer than that between students and faculty. The reported numbers do not mean the factual numbers because maybe many cases were not notified to faculty members.

Perhaps the numbers of cases of cheating in the second to fourth year are much larger and, as a result, the average is increasing. Or perhaps that students have been tired with the honor codes and did not want to notify even they noticed someone cheating.这段不错,但是是不是每段前面有个中心句更好。

Thirdly, the survey‘s result as reported by the arguer is also questionable because the argument simply equates the claim that students would be less likely to cheat with the fact of that. Actually, common sense tells us that some people would not tell truth especially in this kind of survey that related to their reputations.
