It is the artist, not the critic, who gives society something of lasting value.
If we name artists, who create the most gorgeous art flowers decorating the whole art garden and displayed to most visiting people, gardener, no doubt that critics, who make comments on works of art, will be considered as the guider who show us around the whole scene of very garden. And, as for value and influence to society, no less significance could be taken to each side between artists and critics when we evaluating them.
Art is a form of language, which can be used by artists to express their potential emotions, experiences, desires, thought and spirits possessed, and the work of art is an outlet, through which artists aim to presenting these feelings out towards the whole world with their unique language of art. Due to the distinct experiences artists have gone through, and the differential emotions artists desire to demonstrate, distinct works are produced. Certain of which will further develop potential impulsions and obscure problems hidden in the society, while others are just designed to show an particular understanding of infinite beauty artists desire to seek (artists’ perception and pursuit of beauty is also an emotion in their minds). So whenever we turn our attention to Medieval and Renaissance artists, we can see conspicuous Christian themes lying behind, reflecting the value system hold by contemporary populace, and the mores as well as culture permeating the entire society that time. And whenever we go down to the Grand Louvre to have a sight of “impression, sunrise”, painted by Claude Monet, one founder of French impressionist painting, we will definitely attracted by and even identify with combination of light and shadow, photochromic and air—one presentation expressing his endless enthusiasm in pursuit of beauty in his eyes. The former brings us one culture at a time, which is of lasting value to society, and the latter one enrich our taste of beauty, which also carries weight to our society. Accordingly, it is the artists who brought about these lasting value to us, and to society since without their creation, not a piece of work of art will exist.
However, please imagine what artistic world will be if without critics, but full of artists creating works of arts continuously, and the rest—all general populace who have no direction of how to appreciate the arts. Will all these values created by the artists still cling for a long period? Or these values just do nothing with those who cannot get full understanding of arts, and thus finally fade away. Perhaps the most likelihood will tend to be the latter. Therefore we shouldn’t either overlook important roles played by critics or discount their influence. In effect, critics can provide worthwhile feedback of how they feel and think about this work, which turns out really instructive and enlightened, if genuinely suggested. Also, critics can open a door for those having little knowledge about arts, and then nudge them to cross the gate of art garden instead of wandering before the threshold. That is to say, critics bridge the chasm between artists and ordinary individuals, assuming a role of spreading just like an expressway where artists and the general convey and exchange their notions and thoughts. So, critics, to artists they are rater and to general people they are introducer. Accordingly, on the basis of this fact, critics also exert a tremendous influence on the lasting value of arts to society.
In the sum, artists are origin to give society something of lasting value—expressing their thoughts and feelings. Nevertheless, some effects to society are for critics because they share a view between artists and the general, and bring amelioration to works. In the final analysis, as to who give the society the lasting value, both do. Artist and critic supplement with each other, just like a cultivator of a beautiful art garden and a guider with ability to comment who is attempting to make people attain access to the scenes of garden. Lacking each part, the values turn to disappear.
