TOPIC: ISSUE144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
WORDS: 517                                DATE: 2009-6-22

Some famous and lasting valuable work of art like the pearls in a beautiful necklace which emit dazzling light that bring forth loveliness to dwell in the world and open for the human race a new chapter of infinite charm and beauty. However, what kinds of work of art, such as paintings, novels, fictions and sulptures, can be defined as outstanding and incomparable production? Who gives society the great works? The artists who creat these works or the critics whose evaluation of an art work serves as a filter which helpes us determine which art is worth our time and attention?

Today, popularity are always written in water. The outstanding work of art must be the one that never lose its blare in the river of time. However, some critics are likely to give high praise on the popular things to cater the taste of the public. When a new thing come out,the first intuition for them is to fight off and criticize. But time and history tell us they are wrong. For instance, when Rossetti first painted the beautifulEcce Ancilla Dommi, he received with withering scorn.According to The Times the pictures were full of affected simplicity, senile imitations of a crmped style, false perspective, crude colours, morbid infatuation, and the sacrifice of beauty, truth, genuine feeling to mere eccentricity. What The Times critic said all the other critics echoed with a vituperative scor seldom equalled. But now the painting is one of the gretest treasures of the Tate Gallery, which breathes with a spiritual purity and sincerity which lift it into the realm of true religious art.Whats worse,it is a truism that many who follow the profession of art and music receive next to no recognition from critics and public in their lifetime.Too often they live and die in poverty and it is only after their death that fame comes. And critics should take on some responsibility for this situation.

However, there is no deny that some great famous artists become distinguished because of the critics which help public recognize their work.Let us return to the story of Rossetti. When Rossetti received blazing comment and may be have the same destiney as some artics who remained unrecognized until after his death. Then it had one unexpected result,Ruskin, another famous critics came up.In two letters to The Times he,in his turn, slaughtered the critics, declaring thatboth as studies of drapery and of every minor detail there has been nothing in art so eranest or so complete as these pictures since the days of Albrecht Durer. These letters,as thunder out of a clear sky,as Holman Hunt said, helped to change public opinion, and to creater for the young artist a kindlier feeling.Sometimes a critic who has a foresight can change the life of the artist. It is usually the critic who discovers the artist, makes him or her known to the public, and records his or her achievements in history books.

Artists and critics, like the binary star, have the delicate relationship with each other and they can supplement each other. It is critics responsibility that make appropriate comment about the work of art.Good critics can help us understand and interpret art. They should crearly know their duty and cant give up their pricinple for catering the popularity or profit.A critic can provide feedback for artists, and constructive criticism,if taken to heart, can result in better work.

To sum up, giving society something of lasting value should be the work of artists and critics.Only through their work and endeaver can we see and enjoy more and more enduring masterpieces. As time passes, the greatest works are those which are created by artists and evaluated by critics which draw peoples attention towards those works.

Some famous and lasting valuable work of art like the pearls in a beautiful necklace emit dazzling light that bring forth loveliness to dwell(dweller) in the world and open for the human race a new chapter of infinite charm and beauty. However, what kinds of work of art, such as paintings, novels, fictions and sulptures, can be defined as outstanding and incomparable production? Who gives society the great works? The artists who create these works or the critics whose evaluation of an art work serves as a filter which helps us determine which art is worth our time and attention?(这一句critics用的从句太长了,和artist那一部分读起来不是很协调,建议分开一下)

Today, popularity are always written in water.(这一句不是很明白,建议说的直接一点) The outstanding work of art must be the one that never lose its blare in the river of time. However, some critics are likely to give high praise on the popular things to cater the taste of the public. When a new thing come out, the first intuition for them is to fight off and criticize. But time and history tell us they are wrong.(句子有点绝对,因为如果什么界定词都不加就等于不界定,所以建议用一下many of them are wrong之类的) For instance, when Rossetti first painted the beautiful’ Ecce Ancilla Dommi’, he received withering scorn. According to The Times the pictures were full of ‘affected simplicity, senile imitations of a crmped style, false perspective, crude colors, morbid infatuation, and the sacrifice of beauty, truth, genuine feeling to mere eccentricity. What The Times critic said all the other critics echoed with a vituperative score seldom equaled. (这一句语法有点问题,主语是the times?最后哪儿seldom equaled是修饰score么?) But now the painting is one of the greatest treasures of the Tate Gallery, which breathes with a spiritual purity and sincerity which lift it into the realm of true religious art. What’s worse, it is a truism that many who follow the profession of art and music receive next to no recognition from critics and public in their lifetime. Too often they live and die in poverty and it is only after their death that fame comes. And critics should take on some responsibility for this situation.
这一段主题句如果是红线部分的话,作者没有分析为什么或怎样to cater the taste of the public,只是陈述的artist的作品被ill-judged的事实,如果要develop一下的话,最好分析一下原因。其他地方都写的不错。

However, there is no denying that some great famous artists become distinguished because of the critics which help public recognize their work. Let us return to the story of Rossetti. When Rossetti received blazing (uneven) comment and may be have the same destiny as some artists who remained unrecognized until after his death. Then it had one unexpected result. Ruskin, a famous critic came up. In two letters to The Times he, in his turn, slaughtered(最好换一个词,写艺术issue用这么粗俗的不好) the critics, declaring that both as studies of drapery and of every minor detail there has been nothing in art so earnest or so complete as these pictures since the days of Albrecht Durer. These letters, as thunder out of a clear sky, as Holman Hunt said, helped to change public opinion, and to create for the young artist a kindlier feeling. Sometimes a critic who has a foresight can change the life of the artist. It is usually the critic who discovers the artist, makes him or her known to the public, and records his or her achievements in history books.

Artists and critics, like the binary star, have the delicate relationship with each other and they can supplement each other. It is critics’ responsibility that makes appropriate comment about the work of art. Good critics can help us understand and interpret art. They should clearly know their duty and can’t give up their principle for catering the popularity or profit. A critic can provide feedback for artists, and constructive criticism, if taken to heart, can result in better work. (这一段论证的不错)

To sum up, giving society something of lasting value should be the work of artists and critics. Only through their work and endeavor can we see and enjoy more and more enduring masterpieces. As time passes, the greatest works are those which are created by artists and evaluated by critics which draw people’s attention towards those works.
