Masses of people assert that govenments of countries where lesser-known languages are spoken should act to prevent these languages from becoming extinct. It's not difficult to see a certain degree of rationality that a country's indigenous and distinct languagess should not be abandoned and forgotten. A contrary view would reveal that these languages' extinction are often caused by the process of natural selection and globalization, and the lost of these languages' speaker will be the key point which cannot be prevented by coercive measures since each individual have free will to choose their ordinary language. Nevertheless, while people must not force the government to intervene the popularization of major languages and personal language favor, the the proper authorities are also encouraged to protect those endangered languages which they considered to be particular significance.
To begin with, it is obvious that the essential function of language is to communicate. The less people using one language to talk with each other, the less importance of it to exist in the world. In more cases, the lesser-known languages being lost is result of the lost of the population of its speaker. Therefore, from the aspect of economy, it is of little worth for government to pay more attention on language revival. Although people will lost diversity of culture from the extinction of some lesser-known language, they can made up for the loss by making good use of the major language in order to receive more benefit from efficient communication.
Even if sometimes governments want to meliorate the living space of lesser-known languages, they are also facing a cruel reality that they do not get enough resource and time to deal with such project since more urgent project must be dispose preferentially rather than preventing the languages which are on the verge of extinction. When comparing those endangered languages and minorities, to save the latter is the immediate priority. For some less-developed countries, govenments must first better their material conditions with the limited resources in order to assure their life survival. Under this situation, it is impossible for the public authority to find more manpower and materials to undertake any projects of language revival. Even though these countries wil get international aid, improving the whole country's quality of living should also be ranked ahead of saving endangered language. Through the economic construction period, the lesser-konwn languages is on their way of dying out: close minorities group have to incorporate the international competitive environment as soon as possible, thus one problem these people should first solve is predominating how to use mainstream languages to communicate with the world, so that those less-known language will surely be used much less than before and finally become relics.
On the other hand, human beings also need spirit life after they have solved the survival problem. It is praiseworthy, but not exacting for those governments who get the ability and volition to put in practice to support the task of preventing lesser-known languages from being lost in order to preserve the distinct ideas that only these particular languages can convey. Languages embody unique local knowledge of cultures and natural systems in the regions and such diveristy is essential for promoting scientific and technological progress since it is the interaction of ideas that is one of the major generators of human invention. Thus, in some cases to lose a language would be to abandon cherished beliefs and ideas that can be conveyed only through language. For that matter, while the situation is not that bad, the government should employ some more active methods to give life to those endangered language in order to get more long-term benefits. For example, the authorities should invest more interest in documenting the lesser-know but valuable languages in terms of their grammer, lexicon and oral traditions. The younger of minorities should also be encouraged to learn and use local languages as well as the official languages. All these work could make more sense for the research areas of linguistics, philosophy, history artistic literature.
In sum, one thing will be valuable only if people give meaning to it. Although there will be always a contention about whether government should take the responsibility to prevent language extinction, it finally depends on the political attitude selection between to be global integration and to be stand alone complex. A certain lesser-known language will surely becoming extince once its speakers decide to contempt or even feel ashamed for it no matter how arduous the government working for. The governments' assistance would be effectual only if the extinction process is just involuntary and passive for speakers. Even though the language documentation will keep materials of endangered languages, they will also supposed to die eventually if no one speak with them any more. If one make up his mind to suicide, why you must save him time and again? |
