I first met history as a course at primary school when I had no idea what was it. It was just a bunch of data with famous people long ago all over the world, who were a part of a fantastic story for me. From the ancient china to post-modern North America, every part of it was quiet a legend to me, which uttered a great number of heroes’ bravery and wisdom, people’s everlasting enthusiastic for freedom and peace. I thought people in history were all the same, due to human nature never change no matter what life styles they had lived with, those innocent ones who lived under poverty and cruel domination fought for better life, while those evil ones invaded others’ homeland and robbed everything visible.
After I pursued further knowledge in middle school late, history is much more than just stories contained people’s tears and laughter, nations’ past as well were linked to modern lives which indicate so many systematic differences on cultures, science, art and etc. By history I know why Africans speak English, why Taiwan was part of China and why Chinese hate Japanese. Patriotism is grown up in young people’s hearts as time pasts by and be nurtured slowly as a member of this nation. History teaches us to be pride of being so lucky living in this culture. History can build a sense of wanting to be responsible to one’s life and a well-being part of the society. Further more, history doesn’t only function in establishing the sense of national pride, but also teach lessons on the world’s future development.
People nowadays can seek examples in history to avoid same tragic mistakes causes by wars and diseases. People used to be in wild, lived with animals and killed same-kind just for food. Therefore human were as low as just beasts at that time. As evolution went on, human formed into societies, experienced feudal operations then the communist government, and underwent imperial reforms. Those are great development that different societies made to have a stable and sound life in different times, which have set up a huge knowledge foundation to benefit people. In the 19th century, ceaseless regional wars finally entangled into world wide wars which shocked entire human beings, of who may lose their kin and loves in the fight and suffer from unstable war lives, shout for peace and humanism. I can see how people resent wars, when North Korea wanted to make nuclear experiments caused big storm in world wide public voices went against it. This is the lesson history has taught the world, to love peace and to protect war. While N1H1 virus broke out as a massive power world wide, China got the experience back into 2003, the year of fighting with SARS which were much fiercer. The past shows the government should take part in the anti-virus war so that the great majority can be better protected. So did the government. Now the epidemic is under control, and most patients caught the disease are carefully watch and treated.
As I see through the history, the main contribution is not telling us the sameness between people in various generations, human nature is born in gene in the long river of biologic development, why bother to look into that. The more concern that people should put upon history is how we can use the inner connection and experiences in history to face the current circumstance which will benefit people better. Only pure theory of history can not be applied in realistic world, and this would be a big lose. Take recent world economic recession for example, it was not the first time last ten decades, which is sure that we can draw lessons from last time and keep the damage on the lowest level as we can. |
