ISSUE153  "Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."

The speaker asserts that students should question whatever they study with certain skepticism instead of accepting it passively. From my standpoint, even though question could affect the rate of learning to some extent, the critical thinking is still a significant ability the students need to gain for the present learning and the future life. But the knowledge learned passively at first stage is also necessary.

Admittedly, endless questions occupy a large amount of time which can be applied to learn much more. And without adequate knowledge amassed, no meaningful question can be proposed. For example, a pupil may ask why the chicken has two legs, then how will you respond? Evidently you can not explain with the evolution theory which is beyond his understanding. Such questions may also annoy the teacher, which may lead to less care and attention.

However, Thomas Edison is just such a boy with hundreds of questions as young, and he eventually became one of the greatest inventors in the history. That makes it clear that the merits of questioning far outweigh the seeming disadvantages. During the process of questioning and answer finding, students can acquire much more information relevant and master the logical reasoning of the conclusion. Whatever we study is to apply no matter academically or in the practical production. When the situation ahead is no more as what we studied before, it is the strategy and mode of thinking which gained in the questioning that help us solve the problem and draw the conclusion. In addition, the desire to get the answer to question is also the incentive of students to pursue learning and the pleasure when problems solved is also encouraging for further study.

On the other hand, the knowledge we have today is amassed by generation after generation. Both the observation and interpretation are somewhat subjective, thus the flaws are inevitable. If we always accept what we were taught as right passively, then the mistakes the predecessors committed may never be found and we never are right. In this case, after challenging and questioning what has been convinced, we finally knew that the earth is like a ball, nucleic acid carries the genetically information, and flu is caused by virus, est.’s we can see, numberless great breakthroughs are the result of skepticism.

Moreover, at first stage, the function passive learning serves, which lays the foundation of one's knowledge system, can not be neglected. Taking the Chinese classical article learning as example, the Chinese classical articles are often obscure and abstruse, thus students have so many questions, not only about the words but also the content, that teachers can not explain them all. Experience proves that the best way to learn the classical article is reciting them firstly and then spending plenty of time to digest. Quantities of people claim the time that they truly understand the words learned in school is, several years later, after experiencing a lot and becoming mature.

On the whole, the passive learning should not be abandoned but skepticism plays a more critical role in studying and is supposed to be cultivated at an early age. In order to reach an efficient and wise learning strategy, a perfect combination of passive learning with skepticism according to the situation and their merits respectively is required.

2# fake2009
