ARGUMENT51 - The following appeared in a medical newsletter.

"Doctors have long suspected that secondary infections may keep some patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain. This hypothesis has now been proved by preliminary results of a study of two groups of patients. The first group of patients, all being treated for muscle injuries by Dr. Newland, a doctor who specializes in sports medicine, took antibiotics regularly throughout their treatment. Their recuperation time was, on average, 40 percent quicker than typically expected. Patients in the second group, all being treated by Dr. Alton, a general physician, were given sugar pills, although the patients believed they were taking antibiotics. Their average recuperation time was not significantly reduced. Therefore, all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment."

论点:Doctors have long suspected that secondary infections may keep some patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain.
结果:Therefore, all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment."

攻击点:
1.
样本不同,不是所有muscle strain都会有二次感染,需要抗生素,平均不能代表全部
2.
医生的身份不同,导致治疗方式不同;第一个用了antibiotics的同时可能又用了其他疗程
3.
antibiotics
的促进作用不能保证会病情再发

The argument is well-presented, but not thoroughly well-reasoned. By making a comparison of the certain group of patients, all of whom were treated for muscle injuries by using of antibiotics regularly throughout their treatment and therefore recovered more quickly, with the second group of patients, whom were given sugar pills instead and subsequently recuperated as before, the argument for taking antibiotics could help accelerate recuperation seems logically. However, the arguer ignore the alternatives discussed below.

The result of certain group of patients with muscle strains in certain degrees could not represent all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain. Firstly, two groups tested in the experiment may differ from each other in patients’ condition, constitution and drug sensitivity. If the patients are suffering severe muscle strain, he/she may recover more quickly by using antibiotics, as for the one who suffers slightly or who have good constitution, who could rehabilitate quickly through adequate exercise and rest, the abuse of antibiotics may seems helpless or even harmful , hindering the improvement of the condition instead. Besides, it seems more complicated when some patients treated have the sensitivity of antibiotics, their condition may turn out not improving but deteriorating the patient’s condition. Thus, we should treat the results according to different group of patients with different characteristics.

Meanwhile, the identity and background of doctors vary in two groups, which may lead to different treatments and consequently different results. Dr. Newland, who specializes in sports medicine, may focus more on diet and repose taken by patients in addition to the use of antibiotics, while Dr. Alton, a general physician, may pay more attention to the other medicine taken by the patients, which may have side effect on patients’ condition. In this way patients may gain different effects by the diet and repose treatment and the mixing use of medicine, directly leading to the exactness of the test and the comparison.

Furthermore, the length of time of study is questioned, we could not avoid secondary infection after taking antibiotics, all of which is the matter of time. As we all know, frequently taking antibiotics would have side effects on patients, several months and even several years after the treatment, which may include other symptoms such as checking the growth of the teenage as well as initiating the drug resistance of the body, making no use of other drugs and hence lowering immunity of the body. Thus doctors should be cautious when use the dose of antibiotics.

In conclusion, the arguer may be right that patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment. However, before any final decisions are made about the use of antibiotics we should pay more attention to some other alternatives and variability such as the individual condition and constitution of the patients, the different treatments conducted by different doctors and the dose of antibiotics taken, which are all crucial in the comparison.
