TOPIC: ARGUMENT9 - The following appearedin a memorandum from a dean at Omega University.
"Fifteen years ago, Omega Universityimplemented a new procedure that encouraged students to evaluate the teachingeffectiveness of all their professors. Since that time, Omega professors havebegun to assign higher grades in their classes, and overall student gradeaverages at Omega have risen by thirty percent. Potential employers apparentlybelieve the grades at Omega are inflated; this would explain why Omega graduateshave not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University.To enable its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega Universityshould now terminate student evaluation of professors."

=====================================
The arguer sets upthe conclusion Omega University should conceal the student evaluation ofprofessors through the reasoning that the high grades as the evaluation influencethe employment compared with the employment situation in Alpha University.It turns out that, if look critically, the feeble buttresses weaken theconclusion.
At first, thecentral concept of reasoning is that suspicions of employers arise from highgrades. However a question that the lower employment thanks to the high gradeshas blocked access to this assertion. To corroborate this assertion, the arguercompares the employment situation in nearby Alpha University.Actually, is the difference in employment caused by the high grades in Omega University?It is unknown, since the average grade, which in Alpha Universityis 80, is generally higher than that 75 in Omega University. So perhaps, these employerswould like high mark without suspicions. That apparent suspicions of employersare just the a deduction of Omega University. Even it is aexcuse for the poor employment. As long as these concerns can be clarified,this assertion is more defensible.
Besides, anotherpoint worth pondering is that the better employment situation in Alpha Universitystems from the economy. It is reasonable to assume Alpha Universityis a university of finance and economics, and the major of most students areabout the economy. During these years, the economy is booming and market isprosperous. Thus many employers prefer the graduates from this university whoare more skillful at finance and economy. While the graduates in Omega Universityare most trained in the study of science, such as math, physic, and literature,obviously, they are less suitable for employment, but they are recommended to furtherstudy in graduate schools. Consequently, the situation employment in Omega isnot so well. Without further explanation on this vague information, theassertion is crippling.
In my last step ofanalyzing of the reasoning on the high grades, the illation that the high gradeis caused by evaluation of professors is open to question. Possibly correctthough it remains to be, we can boldly speculate that the high marks is causedby the textbooks in Omega University. Perhaps thecontent of these textbooks are easier than fifteen years ago. So the gradesincrease rapidly. The assertion is a far cry from being proved.
Simply put, theevidences cited in this argument are not competent for this conclusion. Afterall, an incorrect conclusion will bring a unexpected loss rather than gain abig cake. |
