TOPIC: ISSUE121 - "At various times in the geological past, many species have become extinct as a result of natural, rather than human, processes. Thus, there is no justification for society to make extraordinary efforts, especially at a great cost in money and jobs, to save endangered species."

When it comes to environmental protection, we always think of species extinction. The speaker feels that it is the natural, rather than human, process that lead to most of the species extinction and there is no need for society to save endangered species at a great cost. From my point of view, I fundamentally disagree with the speaker.
Admittedly, as time pass by, many species have become extinct as a result of natural processes. Darwin's theory tell us that the strong one will stay and the weak one will die. In other words, nature always keep those that are adaptable to the environment. For example, dinosaurs became extinct because they could not adapt to the sudden change of the climate, but alligators survived from that time; Whales transform their body to adapt to the sea generation by generation, because their huge body prevent themselves to live on the land. Numerous examples can be call out and natural selection is a force that keep species and also make some of them extinct.
However, natural selection is not the only force leads to species extinction, human processes also contribute a lot. As we all known, human processes have already damage our environment, which is also other species' living area, to a great extent. We keep asking the nature for more resources and at the same time letting out exhaust and polluted air back to the nature. We've already force a great deal kinds of animal to the situation of extinction. Over hunting, more and more constructions on their living area, environmental pollution and the like. Thus, human being should be responsible for species extinction.
Even granted that species extinction can be mostly attributed to natural processes, we human should make extraordinary efforts to save endangered species in order to keep species variety. Some people may ask: "Why should we keep species variety? We can still survive without some of those animals." Indeed, but what I’m trying to say is : we want to live, not only survive. Since we are not machines, we need to relax ourselves and enjoy our lives. That is why we often want to go outside to see and try something new. The more species on the world, the more colorful our lives will be. Without many other species, our world would be a boring one. Could you imagine that there are only a few kinds of animal in the zoo?
To sum up, natural selection is a force that we human can not stop, but we should make our efforts to protect animals we still have. If we want our sons and grandsons to live a colorful life, we should take this responsibility immediately. |
