ISSUE50- "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
Education is crucial for the development of a society. In order to enhance the quality of instruction at the college and university, an increasing number of people argue that it is vital for all faculty work outside the academic world. Is it really the case? As far as I am concerned, except for some pure disciplines, theories should be combined with practices which will benefit both faculty and students.
First of all, modern college or university should impart not only the basic knowledge and facts, but also should instruct some practical skills to students. Admittedly, University is an irreplaceable place to illuminate students how to think critically and behave morally, though these we gradually exploit our potential. However, learning some basic skills, such as operating a computer or fixing automobile, is the reason why students enter to college, which they can survive in society after graduation. Generally speaking, these practical skills are relating to outside world closely and developed very quickly. So a faculty who want to do well in these courses should go out of school and practiced personally. For example, a teacher who is going to teach programming, if he is just familiar with the BASIC, an obsolete programming language but without actual working experience, he may fails to provide the edge-cutting and more practical skills, like VC.NET or JAVA to his students. If this is the case, students will find what they learn in school is old-fashion and unassociated with the mainstream technology incomputer science.
Secondly, when comes to economic field, it is indispensable that requiring faculty work outside the academic world. Merely teaching some economic terms, such as financial crisis, or monetary system, to students is far from enough for cultivating students to become a qualify and competitive employee. With the globalization proceeding, economic situations and international markets are extremely unstable. So if these a economic faculty who is also a business man, like banker or investor, he can impart students the basic knowledge in books as well as the personal achievements outside college. He can tell how to attract customers and how to deal with them in a appropriate way, or share this mind how to choose a promising stock and invest money in it. The class with such vivid examples is quite interesting and may intrigue students totally. Otherwise, a teacher without outside working experience, it is difficult for him to analyze a question in a practical context, and his answer which based on book may be convincing to students.
But it is hasty to indicate that all faculties should spend time to work outside relevant to the courses. Nowadays, there are a myriad of subjects in college and some of them are pure academic subjects, such as Quantum Physics, History, or Mathematic, are truly have a little relevant with our practical living. For a mathematic professor, perhaps it is wise for him to spend more time in laboratory toimprove the algorithms of his work rather than go to work outside. There courses are essentially abstract and hard to apply in living directly, which mean teachers can provide a good instruction to students without practical experience. Furthermore, in order to discover some things new in these subjects,it is call for researches staying on lab and pay all attention to their research.
In conclusion, to provide a high-quality education, college and university should never overlook the significance of combining theory with practice which require their faculty working outside the academic world. But since different disciplines have various features, we should realize the complex of this issue and strike a balance which guarantees the best education to students.
