The speaker asserts that all faculty should spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach for the purpose of improving the quality of instruction. However, in my view the speaker goes to extremes by mentioning 'all faculty', for the reason in some academic fields it is very necessary while in some others it is dispensable.
Generally speaking, working outside the academic world widens teacher's scope, which will benefit both the teaching process and the career of college students. Teachers go out of the classroom to the market and get to know what the real world needs most at present, which may guide the way of their teaching. As technology updates very fast, the book learning can not necessarily keep pace with what people need. Moreover, this can also help college students to make a full appreciation of their future career. After knowing company's requirement for an interviewer, one may prepare himself to suit a job since he is still at school. In short, it is of great use for faculty to work outside their academic world.
In addition, as for some professions, working and researching out of the academic world is not only advocated but strongly required. Take chip-making engineering for example, the original purpose is to cultivate students to become excellent chip-design engineers. But the colleges can seldom afford the expense on producing and testing, for a single chip making process always cost thousands dollars. Therefore, professors engage in factories and companies to search for cooperation which serves as a significant platform for students' experiment.
Admittedly, some may argue that teachers' working outside of the academic world will probably distract them from teaching, after all, their obligation is to teach college students. Therefore, how to strike a balance between the time spending in teaching and researching outside is critical for the professors. However, on the other kind, as for some pure theorization professions, such as history, literature, and mathematics, faculty do not need to do their research out of college at all, and they may just work in their office and can also bring their students ample knowledge. For one thing, these professions can hardly be combined directly with the reality compared with engineering professions. For another, just as mentioned above, working outside their academic world will distract them from their present theorization researches and it is just a waste of time and energy.
In conclusion, I share the belief that faculty in engineering fields should be required to spend time working outside the academic world while those who work in pure theorization areas need not. Moreover, college should impose proper regulation to ensure that working outside will not undermine the quality of teaching. |
