Issue48:the study of history places to much emphasis on indivuduals. the most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been gorgotten.
The speaker asserts that the study of history should emphasize more on the groups of people whose identities have been forgotten rather than some famous individual. In my opinion, I disagree with the speaker’s assertion in some aspects because, in most history events and trends, it is the few key individuals who give the society impulses and ideas to make progress.
Admittedly, as we know history is created and impulse by the mass of human beings but not some individuals, it is understandable that the masses play a fundamental role in history and should not be forgot by the society. Especially in some famous revolutions, the most unwavering supports and the main power in the revolutions are always the masses, which act as an essential factor to the victory of these revolutions. To illustrate this, there is an appropriate example which is very persuasive: In the French Revolution, it is just because of the brave, fearless fighting of these masses to the French kingdom and aristocrat, French Republic, a free and independent country could then be established. Without these groups of people, there would be no revolutions and the nowadays French. Their contribution of these masses to the French should never be forgotten by the people of today. Or consider some great human engineering wonders, just like the Great Wall and the pyramids; you cannot even image how many people devote them in building these human wonders. In short, the contribution of the groups of people is so great that they should never be forgotten.
However, comparing to these groups of people who act as footstone in some event and trend, some individuals and figures serve a more crucial and vital role. From ancient time to today, it is it is always key history figures rather than the nameless groups that inspire the masses to achiever the goals and give the initial force to the trends. Their initial spark to the events could be extremely crucial. Without George Washington and his guidance, there would be no victory in the
American War of Independence and America would no be what it is now. Without Martin Luther King, black man could still not get service in the bar, let alone the civil right and the victory against racial discrimination. Hence, the key individuals who provide the initial impetus to the development deserved to be memorized by the historian and scholar nowadays.
In addition, beside these great persons above, there are still some individuals, particularly in the field of science, medicine and education, which make great contribution to the society and give strong impulses to the world. Consider James Watt, the inventor of the stream engines. The invention of his streams engine makes the factories more productive and lead to the Industrial Revolution, which contributes to people’s life as well as the development of the society. You can not image what life would be if there was no his invention. These people lead the development of the world and make the life of human being more confidence and it is no doubt that the contribution of these individuals to should be engraved in mind by all people and scholars studying history in the nowadays place more emphasis on them.
In sum, given the reasons mentioned above, we may safely come to the conclusion that we should place more emphasis on few individuals because of their great contribution and on the other hand, we should emphasis enough the groups as sometimes they are as important as the famous individuals.
