The author claims illogically that student should memorize facts only after they have studied the ideas, trends, and concepts that help explain those facts, ignoring the likelihood of those students are request various speciality in different domain. Thus, we should develop a reasonable dichotomy towards the topic. Restricted severely by solid model or method, students will fail to improve their own personality in sphere. Besides, overrating irrationally the importance of ideas, trends, and concepts may deny the natural ability we have, for example, creative thinking, self study and unique judgment.
Granted, both theories, equally means ideas, trends, and concepts, and facts exert significantly to our study. The former, which is completed and distinguished experiences derived from forerunners and beginners, avoids us from possible and potential useless work or convoluted problems. On the other hand, the exploration of facts, basic foundation and cornerstone in many experiential subject, plays an important role in judging impartially and clinically objective phenomena when it comes to science research. Most of us tend to choose “The Better One” in study – no matter it is theories or facts.
However, students will lose particular style if they overstate theories. To some extent, ideas, trends, and concepts fetter the deepness and broadness of green-hand study. In terms of art, a highly respected painter would ask his apprentice to further study by learning some ancient art ideas, which may overshadow the creativity of apprentice. Or rookie writers miss their essential mind and special thought by emulating prevailing trends, or even some other masters in literature. Also, it is normal and universal in music pursuit that many novices have been influenced primarily by concepts of magnet long before, thus they are not able to maintain their personal ones. All of these artists – no matter painters, writers or musicians, their stylish and outstanding works stem from their undirected and multifarious perspective of our immutable and exclusive world, which is related to the manifoldness of art and general improvement art as well. In another sense, the author’s contention totally overlooks the negative and harmful effects brought by abuse of ideas, trends and concepts.
On the contrary, ignoring the direction of theories and overvaluing the efficiencies of facts study, students hardly understand a few phenomena somehow and easily bog down into mire of ill-founded imaginations and illusions. Emphatically some experimental subjects are keen to observe disinterestedly accepted facts. Leonardo Da Vinci, the well-known Italia painter as well as a few-known anatomist, anatomized more than 30 corpses in person and drew over 1,000 pictures about human structure. He once wrote in his diary (and I paraphrased)”Only by excellent drawing skills and necessary anatomy theory, catching every delicate detail with painstaking persistence and extraordinary endeavors that can I further my research in human anatomy a litter.” Before this distinguished man, nobody had researched independently about cauls and the path of cranial nerves; combining with experience of his precursors, he also found blood circulations. His apprentice once recorded his work “he never believes in arbitrary guess or imagination” and “only believes in what he sees and experiences”. Proper balance between facts and theories optimized his research greatness, which is why Vinci was able to approach such far-reaching and thought-provoking achievement, and which is why he was called “the Father of Anatomy”.
In summary, my viewpoint goes against the author’s one. Myriad of students bigotedly assert the ideas, trends and concepts are more important than facts or on the contrary, neglecting the speciality of their realm, which definitely tarnishes the advantages of the other one and inevitably limits their progress in study. And even worse, this adverse and cliche opinion might stop further development of students and deprive of their deserved and distinctive abilities.
