Do you agree that the government should support the scientific research even there’s no practical use?

As an old saying goes, science is the ladder to the development of we human being. True as it says, scientific research do bring us with much of the results that we can apply widely to virtually all sphere of our daily life, thus making it more meaningful and convenience. However, scientific research can be divided to two parts: theoretical ones and practical ones. In my point of view, both of them should be taken seriously and funded greatly by the government.

First and foremost, practical research should be financially aid greatly since it requires much of money to put in. Only with sufficient finance support can those valuable researches, especially from engineering or medical science area, be carried out continuously until the date of accomplishments, as it did in the case of Human Gene Series Programs, which involves with researchers from over 10 countries including developed and developing ones. It’s hard to imagine this huge project could even survive without funding from governments. Also, with more money in hand, scientists can purchase the latest equipment ever made and some precious data that cannot be easily obtained without considerable amount of money, which is of extremely benefit to the success of the research. For example, a professor majored in economics has ever told me that data, industrial data in particular, is the key to their success, for the simple reason that if the more figures you’ve attained, the more chances you will grasp to find the correlationship between categories and categories in precise.

Also, we cannot turn a blind eye to those scientific researches which fail to present value instantly, in the ways of giving no financial aid at all. Theory is the basis of practical use, especially in the long term, which has been proved through the history of exploration. No one can ever be succeed without the strong fundamental theories or problem-solving techniques. Taken theoretically astronomic physics as an example, which hardly anyone would view it as useful, it needs funds dramatically to aid its laboratory experiments and astronomic observation and some countries, especially U.S government spend greatly on it, which even has established a specific institution, NASA. Through detailed yet continuous observations day and night, year in and year out, scientists finally attained much of invaluable data and photos of planets, which makes it possible for people to explore these magic planets in person. In that way, how can you deny its necessary of money funding on those researches seemingly of no use?

However, since the government’s budget is constrained, we must admit that there does exist some limits in the investment of scientific research. Much of the money should be put in the improvement of social welfare, especially for a country where people is suffered from starving, medical insurance problems, etc. And considering the efficiency of the investments, the majority of scientific funding should, indeed, be invested on the practical use rather than theoretical ones, for the simple reason that the latter usually requires less amount of money than the former ones.

In a nutshell, the government should put more emphasize on the development of science by giving financial support to scientific research programs, whether they can be used promptly. With sufficient money to maintain the operation of research in a reasonable distribution way, I am convinced that much of research result will be put out to make its contribution to the society, regardless of what kind of science research is.

The reading material proposed three possible solutions to save the endangered type of evergreen tree, Torreya taxifoha, grown in North Florida. However, the professor argues against these alternatives point by point.

Firstly, the professor refutes the idea that planting Torreya in the same place presented in the passage. In her words, the cooler and wetter microclimate that once served as the precondition for Torreya’s growth is now severely affected by the change of either global warming or the decline of the wetlands which once spread all over the state of Florida, making it drier for the Torreya to survive.

Secondly, the lecturer also disagrees with the alternative that Torreya can be removed to other locations, as it is mentioned in the text. She points out that other serious consequences like the unprecedented destruction to the local species, especially those who are already endangered or ready to become extinct, as it did in the case of the introduction of black locus tree.

Finally, the professor holds the opinion of unlikely success to preserve Torreya in research centers, which serves as another alternative to rescue this tree. She argues that two critical standards for species to resist diseases—the tremendous size and gene diversity cannot be meet for those who live in the research center instead of wild condition, which may result in its fatal death consequently in the long term.

Students are more influenced by their teachers than by their friends.

As a particular kind of specie who relies dramatically on the interaction with others, human beings, to some extends, cannot survive without being affected by others. As we students who belong to the large group, there are two critical factors which exerts the majority of influence on us—teachers and friends. There has been a long dispute over the issue that whether the influence of teacher is greater than friends or not. In my opinion, the impacts come from student’s peers, can be pervasive and persuasive than those from teachers. And I will present the reasons in the following passages.

First and foremost, friends are the ones who can be accompanied with us in a relatively long period time, even longer than teachers. Through intensive contact with a person with an increasing frequency, it makes us possible to know him or her better, thus result in the possible continuous influence in return. As it did in the case of Amy, she was one of my mother’s closest friends for over 10 years. According to her words, she gradually knew the some minor characteristics of my mother which can’t be detective at once, taken openness as an example, and in consequence she could propose some useful advice to my mother that she should sometimes not be too open to express all her secrets to others. And my mother, accordingly received her advice. However, on the other hand, teachers, who are always burdened with heavy teaching projects, have limited time to communicate with students, which prevents them from deeper mutual understanding of each other, which will lead to some gaps between them that can be barrier for the influence of teacher to exert.

Moreover, friends have more prevalent same interests with young students, which enable them to have influence in various areas. It is not hard to imagine the enlightened smile in a student face when he gets to know the fact that his friends shows the likeness on the particular comic books or extreme sports like skateboarding, which can act as an indication that they are belonging to the same group and thus increasing the closeness between each other. Within the closeness acts as a tie to interconnect each other, friends will gain the power to persuade his friends where the influence can be presented. Nevertheless, teachers have been always presented in a considerably strict way for student to get close, which may play an exceedingly important role in creating the gap between them, which makes it difficult for their intensive understanding bilaterally, not to say the influence exerted successfully.

Also, we cannot fail to realize some influence made by beloved teachers to students. Not only do teachers show students how to unlock the door of art of science through their teaching knowledge in the courses, they also serve as role model to demonstrate some fundamental principles of how to be a morally good person, which may be beneficial for we students in the future.

In a nutshell, it is self-evident that students are exposed to the influence of both teachers and friends, during which the latter ones show much impact, due to the fact that they can contact in a longer period in our life span and they can share more interests with us. Consequently, they are the ones we should treasure most and worth our dedication and devotion.

The reading material strongly criticizes the harmful effects that brings about by the buzzers. However, the lecturer refutes these ideas by reviewing his experience as a part-time buzzer.

Firstly, he disagrees with the idea that buzzers provide incorrect information about the product they advertise, which is presented in the passage. Instead, he explains that only product users who’ve used it and enjoyed it well can be hired and paid by the companies and what all buzzers says are words of truth.

Secondly, the lecturer argues that consumers tend to be more critical rather than the idea made by the reading material. Taken his experience as an example, he says that consumers would ask more detailed problem like price and service before they were committed to buy the products. And there will be a large probability of not buying the product if the buzzers fail to answer all the questions made by those picky consumers.

Finally, he views the idea as stupid, that buzzing will exert a harmful effect on social relationship, mentioned in the text. He also points out that products advertised through buzzing are most sincere and good products and bad products will not even consider to hire buzzers at all. Instead, Consumers will establish a trustful relationship with buzzers if they feel good after try the buzzing products.
