11"All nations should help support the development of a global university designed to engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems."
Words: 708 Time: 1 hour Date:2008-2-3
Do all nations should help support the development of a global university designed to engage students in order to solve the world’s most persistent social problems, as the assertion claims?  From my point of view, to answer this question, we should examine the necessity and feasibility to establish such a global university.

Admittedly, in modern society where the development of technology and science lead to increasing complexity, all nations need to cooperate in order to solve many persistent global problems such the deteriorating of the environment and the global economical crisis. The pursuit of resolution for the problems above can only be achieved by the multiple-cooperation of all nations in the world. And the primary goal to set up a global university is to help all nations cooperate with each better on the purpose of solving the persistent social problems. For example, nowadays nearly every nation has encountered with the problem of air pollution, which cast harmful impacts on people’s health as well as the nation’s economy. However, if we want to prevent the pollution and protect the environment, all nations should exert great efforts, for the global atmosphere has no national boundary. If only one nation enacts laws and regulations to control the air pollution, the pollutants of its neighboring countries will still blow into that nation by wind. Therefore, air pollution can only be solved when all nations arrive at a consensus and all exert great efforts to control the air pollutants. Taking the consideration above, I concede with the assertion that in order to solve the current problems which are faced by every nation, it is necessary to call for the world wide cooperation in many forms, perhaps including the establishment of a global university.
Yet, as the old saying goes:” To say is one thing, to do it is another thing”. Although the primary goal to establish a global university has considerable merits, and to some extent, are necessary, problems come if we put it into practice.
In the first place, what are the world’s most persistent problems? With different scientific, economic and cultural background, different nations rely on various standards to evaluate what the world most pressing problems are. For African countries, the world’s most pressing problem may be poverty and widespread diseases like aids; As for America, the world most persistent problem may be the threat of terrorism; As for Chinese, the most pressing problem may be the well-being of the huge number of populace and the sheer gap lying between the rich and the poor.  Every nation will inevitably put its won interest in the first place when deciding what the world’s most persistent problems are. Since different nations will probably consider different problems as the world’s most persistent ones, it is quite possible that the global university might be manipulated by the few powerful nations and eventually deviates from its original goal: to help all nations cooperate as to better solve worldwide persistent problems.
In the second place, there are other ways to achieve the goal of pursuit a better resolution for the worldwide persistent problems. To fortify the international cooperation, a myriad of organization have long been established. With respect to political realm, the United Nation has played a significant role in maintaining world-peace. In economy realm, the World Bank provides financial support for many African countries on the purpose of improving African people’s living standard. In scientific realm, more and more international forum and meeting are held and provide scientists all around the world with a chance to communicate and exchange their scientific outcomes and the most up to date information. Numerable international organizations impel the international cooperation and achieve great accomplishments. In that case, it is not necessary to spend a large amount of money in establishing a global university.
To sum up, it is only a beautiful dream to establish a global university, especially concerning about the problems which have to be solved in order to set up such a university. A global university may help us propose better resolution for the world most persistent problems, because it can promote the international cooperation and impel the world wide consensus of a particular problem. However, we have alternative ways to achieve the same goal just as a global university does.
