Artists and critics coexist in the realm of art ever since its beginning, and they play different roles in the development process. Which type of people is more important and gives society more contributions with lasting value? In my opinion, the artists do provide the society with great artworks, while the critics also have their special functions that cannot and should never be ignored.

Admittedly, the artists provide the society with great artworks which help us recognize the beauty of natural and humanity and stimulate us to live with more passion. Since these artists generally have more keen eyes and more sensitive feelings which help them discover the essence of our daily behavior, they could guide us to acquire the inner beauty of the world, our emotions and common deeds, with their great works, such as the music, arts, novels, films and the photos. For example, from the film Titanic, we could acknowledge the beautiful love and precious life. And with the great novel "Gone with the wind", we could learn what the real life is before the Civil War and the valuable characteristics of the former American. Even from the fiction Harry Potter we could realize the importance of honesty, courage and loyalty. With all the acquisitions from these artworks we could understand the intrinsic beauty of life more thoroughly and think with more positive viewpoint, thus struggle for the future with more passion.

On the other hand, critics also have their significant roles in the artistic area as they could help people appreciate the great artworks more effectively. Although containing many valuable essences, the works of the artists' are usually presented in a elaborate and indirect way with essence hided behind the exterior phenomena. Without enough background knowledge, critical thinking and careful examining, ordinary people can hardly understand the greatness and true meaning of an artwork. However, the critics could help us complete the appreciation and discover the values for us. Take the famous Chinese novel A Dream of the Red Chamber for example, ever since this book was brought forward to the public, a group of people had began to make researches in the voluminous novel. With their work, people today could know the life of that period more explicitly and comprehend the connotations the author hid in the novel's poems more thoroughly.

In addition, the critics could help us differentiate the numerous artworks and choose the most valuable one for us. Since the pace of our life has increased obviously and the time for recreation has decreased sharply, we could never finish appreciating all the artworks and there is no need for us to do so. Then again the critics could help us with their experiences and suggestions. We need not to go further to see the famous online bookstore Amazon, in which a book is usually provided with comments from booksellers, professional critics and other readers. With the aid of these comments, and considering our needs, we can choose a book more easily. From this case we could understand the useful help provided by the critics.

Without artists we would have no great artworks that reflect the merits of human and the beauty of the world. Without critics we could not thoroughly and comprehensively understand the great artworks created by artists. So these two types of people are both essential in the development and popularization of art.
