185"Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."

words:409

In some point of view, scandals play an important role in making politics more efficient and academic areas more purified, but it's not always true.

First, I think we should know where are scandals from? Media is the key factor, which make scandals popularly recognized. So we could better say that media supervision is useful in politics, academia, or other areas. In a society where media supervision is highly developed, politicians must do everything efficiently and honestly, otherwise these smirch may have bad influence in his politic career which is obviously unwelcome by politicians. In academic area, scandals may bring an end of academic life of a profession. Any academician who adulterates in his research would be heavily penalized. No one will
believe him anymore which is a tragedy for him. So in this way, scandals could make politicians and academicians more self-restricted.

Besides that, scandals provided opportunities for civilians to take part in politics. Actually, after former U.S president Bill Cliton made perjury in supreme court, thousands of people declared that Bill Cliton should be dismissed since they felt that they had been deceived. Although finally President Clinton made himself pass through the disaster, it's a good demonstration that civilians' power in defeating famous politicians is great, especially when he have scandals.

But these can be concluded to a statement that scandals are always good measures or opportunities to improve our politics or academies, since scandals are more "generated" than "naturally born".We can see that, in almost every scandal, media play an quite important role. It's the media that made the public know the scandal. So other than saying scandals focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could, I prefer saying scandals lead our attention to some problems artificially.

In wartime or natural disaster, media published entertainment starts' sexual scandals to divert civilians' attention on disasters and soothe their suffering. At the same time, when a politician got trapped in scandals, media always use the same trick to divert civilians' focus, which is really badly deliberated. Besides that, sometimes media sacrificed the freedom of expression to get survived in the reign of some politicians. In this situation, whether politic sandals are published are determined by politicians which is very ridiculous.

In conclusion, sometimes scandals provide good opportunities to improve our politics, academics, and so on. Essential progress will be made only in the condition that media’s freedom of expression is guaranteed.
