On unknown
TOPIC: ISSUE41 - "Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science."
From the ancient to today, the development of science has been accompanied with the nonmainstream areas of inquiry. Although the nonmainstream realms can meet the populace's certain need, the role they play in society is not quite significant, and with the development of mainstream science, their role in society will become increasingly small and die out in the end.
Admittedly, the nonmainstream areas of inquiry, in a certain extent, satisfy the curiosity of some persons and sooth(smooth) the perplexity of people to the incertitude of the future. Curiosity that is an inherent nature of human prompts people to explore the unknown things, so when science can not completely explain some mysterious phenomena, the nonmainstream fields of quest is essential to become people to exert a kind of means (the nonmainstream fields of quest become a essential means people exerted).
On the other hand, due to the anxiety to the difficulties that they might encounter, people often relieve their fear and alleviate their tension by fortune-telling. For instance, when one is going to travel for a faraway and dangerous area, the starting day decided by fortune-telling can convince him or her that there will be a good fortune accompanying around him or her, which may make him or her more optimistic and in respond to accomplish the traveling auspiciously. Consequently, the nonmainstream fields still produce certain favorable influence on society.
However, although the nonmainstream areas of quest indeed satisfy people parts of needs, they merely, as for the society as a whole, are a kind of supplement as mainstream science. In fact, The standard that people judge that a sort of thinking plays a vital role in society mainly depends on whether it can be agreed on and be accepted by the majority, whether it can become the mainstream value of people's lives, whether it can become the main mind of the majority(很想用排比,借鉴了一把). Then if we rely on the above law, what the nonmainstream areas of quest can play a vital role? Of course it can not. Consider the fact that people in increasing numbers go to visit their psychologists instead of the fortunetellers when they feel puzzled and distressed. Obviously, the majority of people have realized gradually the essence of nonmainstream areas by which the distress solely can transiently be relieved instead of being cured. After all, the nonmainstream areas of quest only is a solace that people give themselves, and it can not give rise to any fundamental changes for human and even the society as a whole. Thus, people today are more convinced the powerful of science rather than the nonmainstream areas of inquiry.
Furthermore, with the development of science, more and more conundrums that ever were the study objective of the nonmainstream areas are resolved, which will eventually lead to the nonmainstream areas of inquiry to die out. The nonmainstream areas of quest mainly depends on the subjective imagination by which people connect some mysterious phenomena with their own destiny, whereas they only are some subjective desires, not objective facts, and eventually will be gradually replaced by science. In the primitive ages, people were fear the thunder and lighting and endow them many mysterious colors, but with the gradual understanding of the essence of sound and light, people disclose the fact that it only is a nature phenomenon and have no associations with people's destiny(这个例子用得很好)——. Perhaps some people argue that even if the nonmainstream areas can need(meet) people's certain needs, they cannot die out. Nevertheless, what these people fails to see is that in actuality, the most of people who believe the knowledge of nonmainstream fields are some who are absent of education. Obviously, it is the ignorance to science that leads to them to be deceived by the fallacious knowledge. Consequently, with the progress of society and the complete generality of education, the nonmainstream fields of inquiry will be abound to die out accompanying with the disappearance of those without literacy.
In summary, in the stage that mainstream science can not fully solve all problems that worry (worried) and puzzle(puzzled) people, the nonmainstream areas still have certain value of existence as the supplement of science, whereas with the advancement of science and society, the nonmainsteam areas will leave out of the stage of history gradually.
