ISSUE48 - "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."
DATE: 2007-3-22
According to this statement, it is the multitude, instead of the key individuals, made significant historical events and trends possible, therefore the study of history should pay more attention on the mass population. I turn to oppose to the speaker's contention as he neglects the main affect of vanguards and the determing tole they play in the history. While the mass population is the main force to maintain and aggrandize history and their influence are undeniable, we should not lose the sight of the fact that without the stood-out of an vanguard, history would not be like we see today, but shaped in a tremendously different way.
I follow the reasoning that vanguards provides the essential impetus and blow a fuse of an historical event. If we cast a look back at history, it is possible to identify that most of mass movements were sponsored by someone, who can either adumbrate the future trend or be intolerated with contemporary circumstances, and had a will to change current situation, such as The Russian October Revolution which was a coup d'etat by the Bolsheviks under Lenin in November 1917 that led to a period of civil war which ended in victory for the Bolsheviks in 1922. Obviously, the affect of the leader, Lenin, was inextricably related to the final success and the beginning of this movement which once changed a nation’s political structure and cutural traditions. In other words, this is nowhere more true that Lenin is the crucial aspect of the whole movement and shows us a model example to study and admire of.
In a dissimilary way of history in the realm of science, the favouritism over the famous few is even more justifiable. Admittedly, almost all the key breakthroughs or major discoveries in sophisticated area are attributed to certain key individuals, such as, the discovery of J particle by famous physicist, Ding Zhaozhong, the found of Evolutionary of creatures by a biologist, Darwin and what you have. Their unusual experience, some left controversial queries, some encourages us to go on and some warns us; their erudite knowledge leads to the path of development of history. Without these iluuminatis, the textbooks will be filled with emptiness and our study of scientific development will be left with nothing to focus on, and the evidence of the progress will be hidden in the ocean of history.
Nevertheless, that is not to say multitude is no use at all on the path of history. When it comes to the achievement, the contributions and efforts made by mass are undeniable for which they gets themselves into the realization of one significant historical event. The first president of China once said that mass population is the main force to push the waves of history. The saying is used invariably to point out that the power of mass population is the basis to lead to the success of one achivement.
To sum up, with few exceptions, key individuals are shaping and creationg history, however, to ignore the effect of either nameless mass population or famous group leaders is unwise, for both of them make great contribution to the realization of history and to continue understanding history chiefly in terms of their influence.. |
