208. "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."
In the ancient times, all of our ancestors could only afford to cover their bodies with pieces of leaves or hell. Therefore every member of that group seemed to be equal in dress, except the leader, who was usually awarded a crown, which gave him the unique power to rule his people. Similarly, though most nations in the current world have changed their political system, one thing remains the same, that is, people still tend to clarify their difference and uniqueness by their appearance and act. Consequently, since it is the members that determine the characteristic of one society, their behavior and appearance are undoubtedly able to reflect the ideas and values of that society.
As social animals, people are inclined to be identified by their fellow members, and most of them would turn for such identification to certain dress and act. In fact, we human beings have such inclination right after our self-consciousness starts to be formed as teenagers. Consider, for instance, the widely spread social problem of youth criminals. It has been realized that, in some sense, the motive of their wrong deeds is due to the desire of being identified, and apparently they are willing to pay everything. They would think it very pleasing to be considered as a problem, and therefore try to attract other's attention by all means. At the very beginning they may just turn to piercing or dressing unfit large clothes in them, but later, it will get more serious as their desire grows. One would say this is not true for adults, for grown ups are not that crazy and have better self control. However, it turns out that this also fits to the elders.Take the term, white collar, for example. It refers to the kind of people who is usually well educated, works in a big company, has a good salary and even lotsof luxurious hobbies, such as golf, drinking red wine, or riding horse. On the contrary, most ordinary working people, also mentioned as the blue collar, will probably spend their leisure time in local pubs. Therefore, due to the social nature of people that need be identified as someone, they would always turn to different appearance and act to demonstrate their uniqueness or conformity to a certain class.
Regarding the society as a whole, it is through the information of the individuals that the status of that society can be extracted. The relation between a society and its members is analogous to that between a class and the students. When discussing whether a class is good or not, the most straightforward and reasonable way is to inspect the performance of the students, such as how they behave in social activities, or their grades.Similarly, the quality of the social members, in some sense, is capable of reflecting the status of the corresponding society. For example, if most members of a society consider it a duty to support and respect the elders, then it will soon become a widely accepted ethic rule of that society. In contrast, if most people in a society are not likely to take that responsibility, then that society will be marked as the one which is worse than the former one. In addition, the average economic level of all the people is a good calibre of the economic status of that country. Therefore, by inspecting the behaviors of its members, the characteristic of that society can be reliably obtained.
In sum, due to the social nature of us human beings, the desire of being identified make people to clarify their individualityor conformity by different appearance and behavior. Thus, it is no wonder that we could tell the attitudes and interests from the apparent factors. Consequently, since the society is no more than a certain group a people, its characteristics can be reliably demonstrated by the appearance and behaviors of its members.
