In this memo, the president of a chain of cheese stores proposes that all of their stores discontinue stocking many of their varieties of imported cheese and concentrate on domestic cheeses to improve profits. To support his proposition, he cites the facts that five best-selling cheeses at their newest store were all domestic cheese and a recent survey by some magazine also indicate an increasing preference for domestic cheese. Close scrutiny of these supporting evidences, however, reveals the author’s proposition is unconvincing in several respects.

First, the mere fact that the five best-selling cheeses at the newest store are all domestic hardly suffices to prove that all the domestic cheeses sell better than the imported. It is entirely possible that most domestic cheeses not on the list of five best-selling sell no better than most of the imported cheeses. Since the author has not adequately responded to this possibility, his claim is untenable.

Second, the author unfairly infers that the five best-selling cheeses of all the stores throughout the US are domestic cheeses. While this might be the case, the author provides no evidence to substantiate this assumption. Perhaps, the newest store is located in the very state that many prestigious domestic cheese factories lie in and therefore local customers have a preference for domestic cheeses whose taste they are accustomed to. Without knowing whether sale in the newest store is representative of all the chain stores, any conclusion he drawn is completely unwarranted.

Third, as for the survey the argument cites, the president provides no evidence that the number of respondents is statistically significant or that the respondents were representative of all the customers in general. It is quite possible that most of the respondents to the survey are relevant to the domestic cheese industry and many of them hope to see the booming of domestic cheese. Lacking the information about the randomness and size of the survey’s sample, the argument is unconvincing based on that survey.

Finally, even if domestic cheese sells better than imported ones in all the stores and customers have an increasing preference to the domestic, cheese stores will not possibly earn more profit by concentrating primarily on domestic cheeses. Perhaps, the revenue of imported cheese is much higher than domestic ones although they sell not as well as domestic ones. Moreover, it is entirely possible that many customers choose to buy cheese in cheese stores on the reason that cheese stores characterize themselves in providing sorts of cheeses with distinctive flavors and taste sense from all over the world and they may turn to supermarkets if many imported cheese were not on sale. If so, this fact would seriously weaken the president’s claims that the stores can earn more profit by concentrating primarily on domestic cheeses.

In sum, the argument is logically flawed and therefore unconvincing as it stands. To strengthen the proposition, the president must provide more evidence that domestic cheese sells better than imported cheese on the whole in all their chain stores last year and customers have an increasing preference to the domestic cheese. To better assess the argument, I would need to know whether domestic cheese is more profitable than the imported and whether less customers will patronize their cheese stores because of their lack of variety.
