Does looking back for an understanding of the past provide little guidance for living in the present? The speaker claims so, for the reason that things today are newer and more complex. I concede that people today have to face and solve more difficult problems that we have no experience before which can be adopted, however, the history will give us much more than just the experience.

Admittedly, there are more complex issues we never encountered before for people to deal with today. How should we solve the problem of nuclear weapons? How should we consider the issue of cloning? How should we live in this fast developing world, keeping balance between work and life? Without any experience before, people tend to become wildered in these complicated situations. They have to think themselves, act themselves, fail themselves and then, succeed themselves. What they can adopt is their wisdom and endeavor.

On the other hand, however, the long history of human has left us so much on which our science and technology and society today based. Math the ancient discipline, for example, although develops into a new era, its simplest fruit thousands of years ago, still works well today. In every aspect of the world we can see the existence and usage of math principles. Even the most complicated rocket which can travel thousands of miles away can not be made without the easiest math principle. Human civilization is not built in one day. Only by thousands of years' accumulation can our science and technology develop to a level as today. That is why our pupils, high school students have to learn first the knowledge appeared several centuries ago as their basic knowledge, and then turn to the newly developed science and technologies.

Another important reason why human should turn to the past for guidance is that they can absorb the rich nutrient of great thinking and spirit of former people.  By reading literature, enjoying paintings and music, we can think what they thought, we can feel what they felt. Further, the historical heroes and celebrities will become our idols thus stimulate us to fight as they do. As a group of people we may inherit our ancestors' merits of diligence, braveness as well as brightness. No matter how today's situations change, these thinking and spirits will still be our power to fight the difficulties.

In conclusion, although former experience can not directly solve the problems today, they provide us more other helps. Based on these basic knowledge and skills we may not lose, holding these thinking and spirits, we can walk further in the way of civilization.

I concede that people today have to face and solve more difficult problems that we have no （no太绝对了）experience before which can be adopted, however, the history will give us much more than just the experience.（开头简洁，我认为可以，表达上有待提高）

On the other hand, however, looking back to the previous time could help people know the trend of social development, which prevent us to run in the incorrect direction. As we can not predict our future precisely, the only thing we can do is to look back, to judge whether the similar decision before achieves success in its future, that is, today. Former success will provide us experience and former failure will teach us a lesson. The success of Martin Luther King in his fighting for black people’s civil rights tells us that there is a peaceful way, rather than riot to advocate justified rights of people. By learning the experience, people today whose rights are harmed may take the similar actions. Although the specific situation may be varied, the basic principle of this endeavor changes little. What is more, even if people are in an autocratic society where this democratic measures make little efforts, there are examples of different kinds of conflicts, and people may choose the best way to achieve their purpose by considering many of the instances in history. In another sense, people can learn what is wrong from history thus make careful decisions. The fault of developing economy regardless of the world’s environment has roused so many problems today, such as pollution, global warming, and so on. Considering these bad effects, people today have a brighter view and vast consideration when they make decisions.

No matter how today's situations change, these thinking and spirits will still be our power to fight the difficulties.

In conclusion, although former experience can not directly solve the problems today, they provide us more other helps. Based on these basic knowledge and skills we may not lose, holding these thinking and spirits, we can walk further in the way of civilization.
