Admittedly, education encourages students to question and criticize according to the author’s assertion. I agree that unreasonable questioning or hypercriticism does disturb the harmony of society, otherwise, rational criticize could promote the social harmony in stead. On the other hand, the author ignores that education also teaches the students how to cooperate and communicate effectively with others which is the basis for a harmonic society.

First of all, I concede that irrational criticize which bases on the illogical emotional activity functions to destroy the social harmony under some circumstances. One obvious example that could help understanding this idea is the period in Germany ruled by Hitler. He condemned publicly that it were Jewish people who had taken living opportunities from German people. While seen from today's point of view, such statement is totally absurd and groundless, most ordinary Germans at that time especially those who did not have jobs to keep their family were instigated to believe in it by Hitler's persuasive public speech. Later, the Jewish people suffered from great persecutions including massacre. It in some led to permanent discordance between Jewish people and Germans. Therefore, the unreasonable question could only result in disharmony in society.

Nevertheless, the rational criticize could expose and get rid of the flaws of the whole society and foster the social development and harmony such as mutual understanding between different races and the freedom to speech. For instance, Martin Luther King was exposed to influences that related Christian theology to the struggles of oppressed peoples throughout his education. Then he studied the teachings on nonviolent protest of Indian leader Gandhi. Besides, his public-speaking ability was gradually developed through taking part in many speech contests in college. These experiences he learned in early life all contributed to his later struggling for equal rights of Afro-American which in turn led to the stabilization and social harmony of United States. Undoubtedly, it is the education that essentially conducts people to learn the drawback of human society and devote themselves to making society a better one.

On the other hand, the speaker did not mention that education also indoctrinate students with the tolerance of different ideas and respect to other cultures which is fatal to the social harmony. For example, we all know that most universities in the United States are multi-culture molten pots in which students with various culture backgrounds study together. Often, students coming from different countries with divergence in value system live and study together, they gradually know much more about each other's cultures which add to the mutual understanding. This kind of understanding could contribute a lot to the harmony of society after their graduation. At least they know how to live peacefully with neighborhoods from other culture backgrounds.

In sum, as mentioned above, education shows the students both the spirits of endurance to differences and rational criticizing or questioning. From this point of view, the education acts greatly to promote the social harmony.
