Argument 65 The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States."For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."
In the argument, the president of the chain of cheese stores advice that it is the best way that the stores should reduce the number of imported cheeses and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses for the propose of improving profits. To support his conclusion, the president also provides us the best-selling cheeses’ place of production and the result of a survey. However, the president fails to consider other possible alternatives which may destroy his assertion as follows:
First, the president suggests domestic cheese will sell well by citing the fact that the five best-selling cheeses at their newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin last year. However, the president does not provide us more details about the cheeses produced in Wisconsin. It is possible that during last year Wisconsin's cheeses producers combine to assist a sales promotion of their cheddar cheeses, therefore the average price of their cheddar cheeses is lower than other producers especially foreign cheeses producers, so that the cheese customers were appealed by their low price. However, this year, the sales promotion does not exist again, this circumstance directly causes the customers choose other cheeses which may include imported cheese. In a word, the president's evidence about the five best-selling cheeses last year cannot convince me on his assertion.
Second, the president also points out a recent survey conducted by Cheeses of the world magazine showed that the subscribers have more interest in domestic cheeses than before. However, are there enough subscribers who responded the survey to show the reality of the survey? If the number of the respondents is very few, the increasing interest of domestic cheeses contributes little to the president's conclusion. What's more, are the respondents of the survey mainly the consumers of the chain store's cheeses? It is possible that the viewers of the magazine rarely go shopping in the chain of cheese stores we talked above and they don’t even know the which cheeses are on sale in the chain stores. Though the respondents expressed their preference of domestic cheeses, they won’t buy the cheeses in the chain of stores.
In addition, even though we admit that discontinue stocking imported cheeses will reduce the expense, there is no sufficient evidence to show that it is the best way to improve profits. The president ignores other possibilities of improving profits such as sales promotion, decreasing the purchase price of the cheeses and so on. Overall, without further analysis of other ways of improving profits, the chain stores should not follow the president’s advice.
In sum, though the president’s conclusion seems logical, there is no reason to adopt the president’s suggestion. Before final decision is made, the president should take respect the possibilities carefully which may cause the failing of the chain store. |
