In the current pragmatism-oriented society, it seems that the only purpose of researches is to make human material life better. However we neglect researcher's inner pursuit of self-realization and the power of interests. I strongly agree with the author that the scholar's interests deserve much more concern than a contribution the research does to the society.


To begin with, the world needs scholars and researchers to assist with the human development. Human beings have no shortage of urgent problems such as lake of food, all kinds of pollution and scarcity of resources. However there is something much more important than that, the basic human right-self-realization and the control of one's own destiny. We can't force a people to take a job he doesn't like in the name of social benefits. It is ridiculous and against human rights. Without basic human rights, none of the problems seems to be of great significance. The scholars and researchers should be allowed to pursue their interests regardless of whether it is a contribution to human society. We should respect their rights to pursue their interests and their choice about their life.

Moreover, because of the nature of research, it is almost impossible for any one to evaluate the worthiness of a research before scholars get result of it. The study of pure mathematics seems useless in the past. Only people who are attracted by its great beauty would be devoted to it. However, nowadays no one can ignore its indispensible function in all aspects of human life. Physics and chemistry have a tight relation with math. Even the current hottest subject-finance relies on math a lot. All people are restricted in their times, they can't have insight about what would happen. Plus a research's value not only reflects in a certain time, it can influence and improve our life in future.

Finally, as a popular saying goes "Interest is the best teacher." if a person does a thing he likes, he will try his best to do it. He is attracted by it so he will devote all his time on it, collect readings about it and not be tempted by other things.
Luogeng Hua, a famous Chinese mathematician, was born in a poor family. He was forced to help his family to run a small shop. However, he was so interested in math that he pay no attention on the shop and customers always complained about him. His parents blamed him and criticize him because they think if he continued to study math, there will be no bright future for him. On the contrary, he becomes a master in China and pose Chinese math to develop to a higher level. Based on it, we can see that people who has interests on one thing can reach his potential and make the greatest contribution to a society.

To sum up, because of human narrow limitation, on one can exactly evaluate a research and study. And we should respect others' basic rights to follow their own interests. In addition, from my perspective, scholars and researchers can only fully develop their potential and creativity and contribute the greatest to a society by taking up the thing he has great interests in.
