You are lucky if you met the similar trouble as a child, because you must be calm and know how to deal with the cut. Equally, if people look back and summarize some useful experience, they will be beneficial when they are facing the same problems. From my point of view, an understanding of the past can give guidance for living in the present.

Comprehensively understanding of the past gives people substantial telling examples in human history, which involves most of aspects in our present life. That is, if people analyze the past tactfully, the past can be used for reference to solve problems today. Take the financial crisis now the globe is facing as an example. Although the reasons for current financial crisis and for the great depression in the United States in 1929 are actually different, but the results of them are extremely resembled—the United States was plunged into its most severe economic downturn in 1929, while the most countries across the world, especially the developed countries, are struggling against the retrogradation in economic—perhaps people could find appropriate solutions to the current fanancial problems through analyzing the Great Depression or other similar economic events in history. Besides the economic area, people can conclude practical rules by studying history in other fields as well, such as the period of volcano eruption in geology, the incidence of a diseases in epidemic. Therefore, learning the past can truly play a guiding function.

Admittedly, some new inventions, like computers, telephones, and cars, only exist in recent several decades, having changed humans way of life drastically. Considering there is no such high technologies and sciences in the past, looking back for an understanding of the past seems helpless when people need experience to deal with new kind of problems. For example, the debatable cloning technology, which has developed rather mature and even get success in hundreds cases of zoopery, is still prohibited from producing human beings. Maybe somebody say that its results are unpredictable and may be horrible so it is understandable to forbid the cloning technology, but the problem is that how we can use such high technology to creat more value than we have done before. Clearly, the past experience cannot give any answers, and the current generation have to solve it depend on themselves. The interesting fact is what now are tough problems will be valuable experience for the future.

However, even if some kinds of history have no relevance to our daily lives, studying the past help people develop essential skills, such as critical thinking, accessing evidence, which is required for an educated person. Now that in the process of historical study people are inevitable to meet diverse interpretations, learning how to combine different kinds of evidence—public statements, private records, numerical data, visual materials—develops the ability to make coherent arguments based on a variety of data. This is an essential citizenship skill which can be applied to information encountered in everyday life. Therefore, studying history provides people some useful skills.
