TOPIC: ARGUMENT238 - The following appeared in a memorandum from the president of Mira Vista College to the college's board of trustees.

"At nearby Green Mountain College, which has more business courses and more job counselors than does Mira Vista College, 90 percent of last year's graduating seniors had job offers from prospective employers. But at Mira Vista College last year, only 70 percent of the seniors who informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation, and only half of these graduates were employed in their major field of study. To help Mira Vista's graduates find employment, we must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumés and interviewing skills."

The argument is well-organized, but not well-reasoned. The arguer supposes that Mira Vista College should offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire more job counselor. To support his advise, he make a comparison between Mira Vista College(M) and Green Mountain College(G)of the employ rate of graduate seniors and give out some information. But there are some flaws in the argument lowering the credibility and accuracy of the conclusion.

At the beginning, the assumption lack evidence that the comparison between M and G is viable. If M is an art college with majors on music, dancing, and G is a business college with majors on finance, marketing, the comparison between two totally different types of college on employ rate is meaningless.

Secondly, conceded that M and G are of the same kind, there are still flaws on the statistics in the comparison. What if the students in M who didn't inform the placement office also find good jobs? The number 70% is of less found. How many students of the 90% in G find full-time jobs? Maybe the number of full-time job students is less than that in M. How many graduates in G are employed in their major field of study? Perhaps it is less than 50%. Therefore, lacking of information on the details in employment, the assumption that M has a worse employment situation than G is plausible.

Thirdly, even that the statistics are believable, there is no evidence proving that the business course and job counselors have an effect in the job hunting. Perhaps the human resource market already has enough employees obtaining business knowledge, and there is no more need in it. Perhaps the students in G have a high academic level and ability to adjust to society so that they attract more employers. So the job counselors help little to the graduates.

Moreover, even the business courses and job counselors are helpful in G, no solid facts prove the assumption that M need them as well. Even if that the employ rate in M is lower than G, the reason may not be the lack of business and computer courses and job counselors. Maybe it is because the majors of M are temporarily already full in market, the business and computer courses and job counselors may make no difference.

In sum, the arguer's conclusion still need more evidences
For M college, in order to change its employing situation, perhaps it have to take measurements, such as marketing investigate, teaching level improvement, and so on.
