TOPIC: ARGUMENT238 - The following appeared in a memorandum from the president of Mira Vista College to the college's board of trustees.
"At nearby Green Mountain College, which has more business courses and more job counselors than does Mira Vista College, 90 percent of last year's graduating seniors had job offers from prospective employers. But at Mira Vista College last year, only 70 percent of the seniors who informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation, and only half of these graduates were employed in their major field of study. To help Mira Vista's graduates find employment, we must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumés and interviewing skills."

In the argument, the president of Mira Vista College (MVC) makes comparison between the Green Mountain College(GMC) and his own college in the number of last year's graduating seniors had job offers, and then concludes that it is necessary to offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumes and interviewing skills. After carefully analyzing, I find several logical fallacies in the argument, which makes it unpersuasive.
Firstly, the author fails to provide the detail information about the two colleges, therefore we do not know whether the two college is comparable in types. If the two colleges are different types, such as the MVC aims at teaching mathematics and physics, while the GMC aims at some practical subjects such as the Master of Business Administrator (MBA) or the Software Engineer and so on. The common sense tells us that the students of GMC will have better employment perspectives. It is meaningless to compare different types of colleges, since the knowledge of practical majors can be more easily used to practice than theoretical majors.
Secondly, even if the two colleges are comparable, the GMC's better situations of graduating seniors' employment may be due to other factors rather than merely business courses or job counselors. It is possible that GMC's have more famous professors and the quality of students and instrument is also better than the MVC's. In this case, offering more courses in business and computer technology and hiring additional job counselors may be useless to improve the employment of
the GMC's students. Without taking account other possibilities, the argument cannot be reasonable.
Finally, even if above two assumptions are true, we still cannot make sure that the similar measures are also suitable for the GMC. As mentioned above, the GMC aims at cultivating MBAs and Software Engineers and so on, while MVC's most majors are about the theoretical subjects such as mathematics and physics, which are not related with business or practical computer technology as GMC's. Or, GMC already has offered enough courses in business and computer technology. Thus, offering more courses in business and computer technology would be harmful to the education in GMC.
To sum up, it is need further study about the two colleges, in order to point out the real factors determining the employment of graduating seniors. What's more,
before taking some measures, it is necessary to analyze whether is it suitable for the GMC's situation.
